Description

Escape to KAHON, our tiny modern shepherd’s hut perched on a hill with bucolic, hilly views. Ideal for couples or solo travelers seeking a compact private sanctuary, it offers calming scenery to unwind, a comfy bed and hot shower after skiing, river adventures, or a day of hiking and biking. Conveniently located between Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks. NO CLEANING FEE. The space Originally used as a mini artist workshop, KAHON is a fully insulated 10sqm tiny hut on wheels built from new and upcycled materials. Its dark timber exterior and hunter-green interior echo the surrounding landscape, wrapping you in a warm, cocoon-like calm that lighter tones could never match. Park right beside the hut and step onto a deck overlooking tree-lined hills and the southern slopes of Mount Ruapehu. Inside, the double bed is a modern take on the classic opium bed with memory foam and duck-down pillows. With full-height glass window/door, the bed looks out toward a panorama of sky and trees, where night reveals a blanket of stars free from any city light. Sit by the window on the low Windsor chair, read a book, or play a board game. Skis reborn as shelves, a smart TV, and a foldable dining setup add to a thoughtful space. In winter, the heater and electric blanket keep you snug; in summer, the wall fan brings a gentle breeze. A small benchtop holds essentials — mini fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee and tea. The ensuite’s rain shower promise the simple luxury of endless hot water. Step outside to the deck where a table for two invites morning coffee or evening wine as sheep wander quietly nearby. Though small in size, KAHON offers comfort and soul — a place to rest, slow down, and reconnect with the beauty of stillness. Guest access The hut is entirely yours — with a private entrance and viewing deck. Climb the tyre steps to Puketiti Lookout for mountain views visible on a fine day, or wander down through the green portal to the paddock and soak in the calm of country life. Other things to note • KAHON is a tiny 10sqm hut — please don’t book if you’re uncomfortable in small spaces. • The hut sits on a hill with a 120m sloped, unsealed road to drive. Parking for 1 car is next to the hut; additional parking is down by the gate. • The drive up the hill can be challenging for campervans especially on rainy days so we suggest parking by the gate and walking up. • We live in the main house with a guest suite. KAHON is positioned away from the main house and with a privacy screen so both places are private. You may come across our guests in the parking area or at the Puketiti Lookout so we do ask you to respect their privacy during your stay. • Quiet hours: 11 pm–6 am. The local siren is tested at 8 am daily. • The hut is exposed to strong winds during storms. • Rural area: flying insects may appear near windows/door in humid months. • During summer days, occasional noise may come from a small family-run mill at the bottom of the hill.
