Our 4.5-acre property is 10 minutes from Fort Bragg and a mile from the beach—just far enough to escape the fog and get a good amount of sunshine. The house is surrounded by redwood trees, rolling meadows and flowering rhododendrons. It has 3 bedrooms/2 baths, a wraparound porch, a library/office, and a hot tub. This beautiful and rustic redwood ranch house is eclectic and full of character with a very large, bright (but unheated) solarium at its center. A true Mendocino experience! The space While the house is technically three bedrooms, "bonus rooms" allow it to fairly comfortably accommodate three families or a group of friends. These include a large office off of the master bedroom that can fit both a (provided) queen-sized floor bed and a pack-n-play. Off of the living room, there's a good-sized office, separated from the living room by a curtain, that can also accommodate a (provided) queen-sized tri-fold mattress. We're happy to arrange the house to best fit your party. If your group is more than six people, please let us know prior to booking. While we allow up to 12+ guests, that is mainly to allow for families with small kids. We can add two additional floor beds to sleep 10, but please be aware the house does not comfortably sleep 12 adults. That said, we trust guests to determine for themselves if they'll be comfortable with the house's layout and ask you to let us know how you'd like the bedrooms (and spare rooms) made up. Please note that this is a drafty mid-century ranch house with an unusual layout. We've recently installed a brand new heat pump system to provide central heat to the bedrooms and large living room. But the solarium is an indoor-outdoor space (a patio that has been enclosed with a glass roof) and is not heated. While covered, it is quite chilly in the winter. In the summer it often gets very warm, which is lovely after a day at the beach. During the warm months, we're happy to discuss the possible use of additional RVs/tents for an additional fee. This is a wonderful property for small family gatherings, but please reach out in advance to discuss details. Guest access The property is 4.5 acres and we welcome you to use and enjoy it. Play in the meadow, make a campfire in the fire ring, have a picnic. We want our guests to have fun here, to make art here, to fall in love with the Mendocino Coast via our "very Mendocino" home. While doing so, we ask that you respect the plant and animal life (no picking or climbing or hunting, please), the personal space of our neighbors (our land is not fully fenced and the house next door is about 100 feet away), and our personal property: there are a few scattered garden sheds, outbuildings and a travel trailer that are not to be used or accessed by guests. There’s plenty of space and we’re so happy to have you. At the same time, one of the joys of being in the country is the natural beauty, quiet, and privacy it provides. We will extend that to you. Other things to note This is a rustic country ranch home, built in the 1940s. It has a lot of character and soul and most of our guests appreciate the eccentricities and sense of place — a true Mendocino experience — it offers. But as a historic rural house, “nature” — lizards, birds, mice, oh my! — sometimes finds its way inside. If you have any issues with critters, we’re happy to help catch and release. Our region of Northern California is remarkably free of creatures dangerous to humans. Almost all of the spiders and snakes, bees and bugs, bears and bunnies you encounter are virtually harmless. Daddy long legs, a willowy spider, is particularly prolific — and absolutely no threat. Nonetheless, I encourage you to be thoughtful and cautious in your interactions with animals and, in particular, the Pacific. Growing up, I was told: “Never turn your back on the ocean.” Also: We have put a lot of work into eradicating poison oak from the property, but it’s impossible to guarantee you won’t encounter it here or, more likely, elsewhere on the coast, so please familiarize yourself with what it looks like. While we hope you won't find it on our property, you're very likely to see it at local parks and beaches.
