Oakhill Wagon, North Herefordshire Rural Retreat

Description

With spectacular views across the valley, and access to footpaths, this hand built, low impact eco-wagon makes the perfect retreat for walkers and couples wanting hill top views, space and comfort, while still getting back to basics in the quiet and beauty of North Herefordshire. The space This is a great location for exploring the historic landscape of the England & Wales border and beautiful river spots on the local river Teme and Lugg. The river Wye is accessible within 30 minutes, as well as the area of outstanding natural beauty of the Shropshire Hills. Oakhill Wagon is 6.2 x 2.5 metre shepherds hut with an indoor compost loo, gas hot water system, shower, and wood burner. Heating comes solely from a woodburner, so you will need to be able to light your own fires for warmth in the colder months. In the kitchen area is a double gas hob, sink, toaster and mini fridge. There is a double bed (requires a high step up onto), sofa seat, and table. Outside the wagon is wooden decking with seating, plus more outside seating and fire bowl overlooking the Wigmore valley. The wagon is situated at the top of a sloping field with views across the valley and towards the hills of south Shropshire. The wagon has been built from wood; felled and processed on site by us. With sustainability in mind, where possible we’ve used reclaimed materials in the build and finish. We are an off-grid small holding with solar array and spring water from a bore hole. We have a small flock of Jacobs sheep grazing the pasture. Our house, not visible from inside the wagon, is located 150 metres away, on the other side of a lightly wooded area. The track that runs alongside the field is a public footpath, but very few walkers use it. The track is also used by cars accessing our house. North Herefordshire is known for its rolling countryside, and lies in the beautiful and historic borderlands of England and Wales known as the 'Marches'. Many of the towns and villages in this region, such as Ludlow and Leominster, still retain their medieval and Tudor flavour, with narrow streets and half timbered houses. The North Herefordshire area is home to many wonderful villages, including those on The Black and White Village Trail and Mortimer Country. For black and white timber framed houses visit Eardisland. It is known as one of the prettiest villages in Herefordshire, on the banks of the river Arrow. Adjacent to the wagon is a footpath that connects to the the long distance Mortimer trail. There are walking loops of either 2 or 4 hours, starting and ending at the Wagon. Within walking distance is the village of Wigmore with shop selling local produce, and 2 pubs. The Castle (recently opened) and The Oak, a renowned, award winning restaurant. You can walk via the roads to Wigmore in 20 mins. Or go on a scenic loop walk to the castle and back via the village within 2 to 3 hours. Wigmore Castle dating back to 1067, is a remarkable ruin, with many of its fortifications surviving still to full height. What we provide: Cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery Tea towels Toilet roll Bedding & Towels Washing up liquid and cleaning stuff Hand soap Salt and pepper Veg oil Blanket Hot water bottle Fire bowl (not for use on the decking) Firelighters and some kindling Basket of wood Not provided: Clothes washing facilities or washing powders Body wash and shampoo (water waste goes into our soak away - we ask you to bring non toxic products with you where possible) Can be purchased from us: Extra wood at £10 per sack, for indoor wood burner or outside fire bowl Basket of kindling £3 Extra firelighters at £2 per pack Other things to note The wagon is connected to our solar array and so we ask you to be mindful of power usage, such as switching off lights when not needed. The bed is high off the ground and the woodburner is exposed so we advise this place as unsuitable for children and babies . Access to the wagon is via steps up to the decking.
