Casa Tonatiuh is the largest of the houses in the Casa Olguin compound. It is set over 4 levels with 3 terraces. The house is suitable for a large family or a group of friends. The living area boasts a wrap around terrace with views to the mountains, perfect for dining outside; large comfortable living room adorned with unique fine art, TV and art books; a double height dining room suitable for at least 6 people; and a well equipped colonial style kitchen with separate pantry. Pioneer's in the "back to adobe" movement, Marilee and Guillermo built their family complex, CASA OLGUIN, in the 1970's. Casa Olguin is a secure compound comprising of five houses, three of which are available for short and long term rentals. It has been featured in several design books, "Living with Folk Art" and "Mixicolor". Stroll through terraced gardens, relax by the pool , feed the fish in the pond, or star-gaze on one of the terraces in this enchanting retreat with distinctive vernacular design. -villa set over four levels - sleeps 6 to 7 -three bedrooms each with private tiled bathroom (2 with bathtubs),1 king, 2 Full beds (sleeps 6) -study area -powder room -colonial-style kitchen (fully equipped) -large living and dining room with high ceilings -laundry with washer and dryer -dressing room in master bedroom -pool - personal wi-fi connection, 2 telephone lines -fireplace (non working) -piano -fine art books -fresh water well -fish pond The master bedroom has its own walk in dressing room, large tiled bathroom with tub and shower and its own large terrace/balcony. The other double bedroom in the main house has its own en-suite tiled bathroom with shower and built in wardrobes. There is a small study room that could potentially act as a further bedroom for a small child. The third bedroom has its own entrance and occupies a beautiful round space underneath the house’s main terrace, this bedroom has its own terrace, an ensuite tiled bathroom with bath and shower and a built in wardrobe. Marilee and Guillermo have been involved in social movements, art, architecture and design projects since moving to Oaxaca in the early 1970's. Mari has been involved in the women's and environmental movements and has worked in the coast with indian communities in promotion and design of textiles. Guillermo has been a leader in social and artistic movements in Oaxaca and is an avid art collector. Every house in the Casa Olguin compound is adorned with parts of the collection, if something catches your eye, please do enquire as some items are for sale. They were the first couple to begin to recover and return to building adobe homes in Oaxaca. Their houses have been examples for other people to admire and also choose to build with adobe instead of cement block and brick as was the trend when they arrived. Their homes reflect this deep respect for vernacular design and its practicality. They have three children and five grandchildren. Most of the family, including your hosts, still live part or full time in one of the five houses in the Casa Olguin compound. If you are looking for a unique and comfortable holiday rental that has an authentic feeling of home, this is the right place for you. San Felipe Del Agua is a quiet residential area at the foot of the mountains, just over 10 mins by car or in a taxi from the heart of Oaxaca City (cost approx US$3), or you can take a bus (cost approx US$0.50), or you can walk (approx 40 mins). Oaxaca City, one of the most visited cities in southern Mexico, which has 16 ethnic groups still practicing their pre-Hispanic languages, culture and traditions. Oaxaca features beautifully restored Colonial monuments and pre-Hispanic archaeological gems. For this reason it was chosen as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Oaxaca is also famous for its rich culture embedded in local markets, food and the arts. Day Trips Day trips to markets and small towns to the Sierra Juarez, Teotitlan del Valle, Monte Alban, Mitla, Tlacolula,Tlacochahuaya, Atzompa, Tule, Ruta Dominica, Santiago Apoala Cleaning is included twice per week and bed linens changed and washed weekly. Laundry facilities are available for use by the guests. If you require more services such as further cleaning, laundry service, cooking, car service, childcare or anything else, please let us know and we can give you the details of our trusted staff so that you can arrange this directly with them at an extra cost. There is a designated wifi router for the house, please note that we are in the mountains and although it is mostly a reliable service, there are times when the area may go out for minutes or sometimes a few hours. There is parking for two cars in a private gated driveway. If you have more than two cars, there is free parking on the street outside. Minimum 7 night stay. Please contact us if you need an alternative check in/out time, when possible we will be happy to accommodate. Maximum 6 guests.
