Close to the house Monday belongs to Webster. The Sumter County Farmers Market has been here since 1937 and still covers some forty acres of produce, tools, antiques, and whatever else the county brings in. It is one of the oldest and largest markets in the state, and it happens only on Mondays. The Florida Bass Conservation Center is also in Webster, if you want to see how the state’s freshwater fish are raised. Richloam and the Green Swamp sit just beyond the fencelines—pine, cypress, deer, turkey, and the quiet of a large conservation. Water and trail Lake Panasoffkee is the county’s big water: cypress along the edge, bass and crappie in it, room to paddle if you want the day on the lake instead of the porch. The General James A. Van Fleet State Trail runs a long, flat line through wetland and pine flatwoods. The Withlacoochee State Trail touches the western side of the county. Both are for walking, bikes, and birds, not for crowds. History under the oaks In Bushnell, Dade Battlefield Historic State Park keeps the ground of the 1835 battle that opened the Second Seminole War. The visitor center is small and clear. The grounds are oak and pine. In January the park holds a reenactment; the rest of the year it is simply a quiet historic field. What you see without going anywhere This is still ranchland. Cows use the pasture. Sandhill cranes work the yards and wet edges. Wild turkeys move through when they will. That is the ordinary life of the county, and it is the part that matches the house. Other things to note The house sits in quiet Sumter County, but the bigger towns are an easy drive. Times below are ordinary traffic from Webster; add a little in rush hour or theme-park hours. **The Villages** — about 15 miles, 30 minutes. Shops, restaurants, and Brownwood Paddock Square without giving up the rural setting. **Ocala** — about 45 to 50 miles, around an hour north on I-75. Horse country, downtown, and Silver Springs if you want a day away from the porch. **Orlando** — about 50 miles, roughly an hour. Downtown, the airport, and the parks are a same-day trip; plan extra time if you are heading all the way to the theme-park gates. **Tampa** — about 60 miles, a little over an hour south on I-75. The bay, the airport, and the city are close enough for a dinner or a flight, then back to the oaks. Nature & Outdoors: Surrounded by the Green Swamp, Richloam and Withlacoochee areas — hiking, biking, ATV, wildlife viewing, horseback riding and seasonal hunting. Fishing: Freshwater fishing nearby, plus approximately an hour to Crystal River and the Gulf for inshore and offshore fishing. Beaches & Springs: Easy day trips to the Nature Coast, Gulf beaches, Crystal River and freshwater springs.
