Guest access The entire estate (5 hectares) is available. Access to the barns (at the entrance to the estate and barns adjacent to the Kerami wing) + to the attic is strictly prohibited. The Commanderie is particularly well served: - by train: * 2h26 from Toulouse (direct) * 2h25 direct from Bordeaux (or 2h37 with 1 connection) * 4:20 from Paris (direct) - By highway: * 4 minutes from exit 50 of the A20 (be careful to avoid the 10-minute loop unnecessarily indicated by gmaps: take Waze) * 3 minutes from exit 19 of the A89 A large shopping area is a 5-minute drive away (Carrefour hypermarket), and downtown Brive is 10 minutes away, or downtown Varetz (3 minutes) to pick up bread in the morning (bakery). The Brive market, on Saturday morning, is filled with local delicacies, including figs or strawberries stuffed with foie gras! It was sung by Brassens. I recommend the butcher shop at the Carrefour de Varetz (3 minutes), excellent, with local meat (Limousin), for example to make Burgundian fondues (you can order in advance). There are two Lidls each 10 minutes away by car, very convenient for savings. Other things to note The Commanderie is a place steeped in history, built nine centuries ago thanks to the dedication and faith of men who "believed in God and the forces of Evil". Numerous crucifixes in the rooms and a very old Maltese cross in the park testify to this faith that has lasted for almost a thousand years. Heroes died there to protect pilgrims attacked on the road to Compostela, other heroes were trained there to be sent to fight and die in the Holy Land to protect the pilgrims of Jerusalem and the tomb of Christ. In the 16th century, the Commandery was taken, besieged and burned during the wars of religion. The different commanders have had exciting lives; my three favorites are: 1/ Georges de Vauzelles (who commissioned the fireplace of the dining room in 1543): he faced Soliman the Magnificent and Barbarossa 2/ Jean de Saconnin, who participated in the defense of Constantinople in 1453 but paid for it with several years of slavery in Libya. 3/ Anne de Nabérat, chaplain of King Louis XIII, who managed to reconstitute all the "terriers and recognoissances" of the very vast lands attached to the Commandery. In memory of these three great men, the three little sheep of Ouessant are called Georges (the little black one), Anne (the white one) and Jean (the big black one). Each guest contributes to safeguarding and restoring this heritage, the love of which has been transmitted to me through the beauty of moments spent with family and the generosity of my grandmother, always devoted to others.
