Rustic homemade forest cabin in the heart of mountain nature and history. Gem mining, world-famous Foxfire Museum, Dillard and Highlands, Nantahala National Forest, Appalachian and Bartram Trails, Cullasaja and Tallulah Gorges, Franklin and Clayton mountain cities. Fenced property on a dead-end dirt road easily accessible by highway. Outdoor firepit where kids can pitch a tent and you can cook/picnic. After a good night's sleep guests may enjoy a homemade hot breakfast. Owner lives on property. The space This non-smoking, tiny house built for hikers, nature-lovers, and woodsmen has the main room on the first level that contains the living room with television, kitchenette (refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave; no sink), bathroom (sink and toilet only), separate stall shower with boudoir curtained off from the living room (cool; it's a handmade cabin; people love looking up at the rafters and listening to the nearby TV), and washer/dryer in laundry room. Upstairs are the four bunkbeds. Dish TV with On Demand (free only) movies. Wifi internet. Books and a few games. At night guests have the option of sleeping upstairs or downstairs. The living room couch opens up to a queen futon with 10" memory foam mattress. (Host will perform setup upon request to use futon for sleeping either ahead of arrival or up to 9:00 PM; opening the futon does make the main room smaller). Upstairs the top bunks are singles and meant for children, but the lower are doubles with memory foam toppers, and could sleep a young couple together in a pinch. This means the cabin can actually sleep 6 people, although it'll feel crowded. Outside is a garden seating area with picnic table, umbrella, and barbecue (self-lighting charcoal briquettes are provided). Arrivals at 4:00 are served afternoon tea and fresh-baked cookies here in summer. In winter, homemade hot cocoa is served indoors. Daytime add-ons of Forest Dinner and Doggie Birthday (see below). The outside fire pit is available with plenty of seating in cedar stumps, chairs and chaise lounge. Wood is provided. This is where the optional (additional charge) forest dinner is cooked and served. The entire property is enclosed by a 6 foot high wire fence. I have 4 dogs and your dogs (see about dog details below in Rules) and kids can roam safely within bounds. There is a gate at the driveway that you will need to manually open and close, or I can help with this upon request when you are about to arrive or depart if you let me know. The neighborhood is private and quiet, with no houses in view except in winter when the leaves are down. Absolutely no smoking or vaping indoors, on porch, or anywhere near house. If you must smoke it is only allowed down by the fire pit. I am around to help answer questions, if you like, or can leave you to yourselves as much as you want. That is until breakfast on my porch overlooking the woods. MEALS (Breakfast, Forest Dinner, Doggie Birthday): Your group breakfast meal choice (one type for everyone) is served family style at a specific time of your choosing between 7:00am - 9:00am. From May 16 through Thanksgiving this meal is included in your room fee. In winter from after Thanksgiving until May 15 breakfast may be ordered a la carte for an additional $10.00 per person (and is not included in the room fee) served in the owner's adjacent dining room. Choose one breakfast for the group: 1. Pancake Breakfast: scratch buttermilk pancakes, breakfast sausages, hot cinnamon apples, syrup, butter. OR 2. Eggs & Bacon Breakfast with Fresh Bread Loaf: scrambled eggs or cheese omelet, bacon, grits, buttermilk biscuit or homemade fresh bread loaf (white, whole wheat, French, or seed and fruit). Each person gets a choice of hot coffee or a pot of hot tea (tea list includes 25 black, green, or herbal teas). Seasonal fruit served for first course. Orange juice upon request. Yum! Please let me know if you need vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free alternatives. Dinner Special upon request at the Firepit (year-round, except if raining; request must be made minimum 24 hours in advance): $100. Slow-cooked beef or pork pot roast, baked potatoes, baked beans for up to 6 people, served with butter and sour cream. The roast is encased with chopped onions and spices in a heavy cast iron pot with whole potatoes wrapped separately and buried in the coals of the fire for 3-4 hours. $100. Goulash or Indian Stew, choose beef, pork or chicken with chopped potatoes, onions, and carrots in a beer, wine, or broth base with Eastern European paprika or Indian spices, slow-cooked 2-3 hours over the fire in a heavy cast-iron pot suspended over the coals from an iron tripod made by a local blacksmith. Feeds 6. If you would like a Forest Dinner just let me know! DOGGIE BIRTHDAY Whether it's your doggo's birthday celebrated with you or your birthday celebrated with your doggo! Outside at the firepit picnic table in our 1-acre fenced forest. MENU Dogs Hors D'oeuvres: Cheese Whiz on Unsalted Crackers Main Course: Hot Dogs (cooked over the fire) followed by choice of Pan Roasted Beef Marrow Bone or Beef Bone stuffed and frozen with Peanut Butter Dessert: Very slim slice of human cake and doggie ice cream cup Humans Hors D'oeuvres: Antipasto Main Course: Hot Dogs with Baked Beans and Sauerkraut, Potatoe Salad, Coleslaw, Pickles, Sauerkraut Dessert: Layer Cake (with candles!) and Ice Cream $100.00 Guest access You'll have the entire cabin/annex. Outside firepit and 1 acre enclosed by pet-secure 6-foot high fence. You'll see me because I live here. Enjoy afternoon tea and hummingbird-attended breakfast on the mainhouse porch (in winter breakfast in my dining room). Nantahala National Forest abuts my property with the trail starting from my driveway. From the house you have access to hundreds of acres of mountains and woods, much of it off-trail country. Trailmap provided. Other things to note Rustic setting. You will probably get cell coverage (although not guaranteed). There is internet at the cabin, including a signal extender. However, this is a mountainous, heavily forested, very rural location with little to no technology (the perfect place to unplug). Satellite wifi is available but slow and can be affected by weather. Forest Dinners can be added onto your stay, and are cooked and served at the picnic firepit. Optional: have your kids sleep at the firepit (bring your own tent) while adults enjoy a peaceful night in the cabin bunk room. They are safe since the property is enclosed. Please understand we are in a wilderness and wooded area. We are often graced with some of North Carolina’s wildlife including but not limited to coyotes, fox, black bears, deer, mice, shrews, spiders, mosquitoes, bees, and wasps. The fence and the dogs usually keep out the larger animals. If you encounter any wildlife outside please remember that, while they are wonderful to look at, they are, by nature, wild and should be left alone. Pictures welcome, petting not so much! We do our best to keep them out of the house but sometimes smaller creatures find their way in. Being in a rural area in the South, it is possible for an occasional insect or spider to find its way into the cabin. Although we do our best to control pests naturally inside the cabin, we are limited to avoid exposing our guests to toxic chemicals during their stay. At any time of year, you may encounter pests during your visit and we do not refund encounters with mother nature. There may be insects (including native yellow jackets) at the firepit. In summer there may be tiny sugar ants inside if you leave food out or make food spills that attracts them. Seeing a bug will not result in any kind of refund. Absolutely no smoking or vaping indoors, on porch, or anywhere near the house. Smoking is allowed only at the fire pit. In the event of a regional drought, the local authorities may ban all outdoor fires due to wildfire risk, in which case the firepit would not be available for use.
