Description
Private house with private garden, and laguna-front home on 20m of shoreline with palapa dock. Nestled in the bird-filled selva 8 km from the town. Ideal for creative breaks or active vacations. Off-grid, and for people that enjoy nature, not parties. The space Four-meter-high ceilings and and an array of windows draw air through the open sala and hammocks. Up the stairs to the huge, palapa-shaded rooftop, a perfect place to enjoy an always spectacular view of the laguna. The dock, right in the front yard, runs between stromatolites and a large mangrove--the iconic features that help give the laguna its famed seven colors. The dock ends in a palapa with hammocks, an ideal spot for catching sunrises and moonrises. You can also walk right into the water from the yard, or hike the dirt road through the jungle looking for birds (over 250 species!) and the occasional monkey. Guest access Ample kitchen, backyard garden and parking, lakefront garden, and large rooftop terrace as well as the entire yard, the dock with its palapa, and the shoreline. Other things to note CHECK-IN: 1-6pm. We can't offer late check-in, but we may be able to offer early check-in. If you enjoy partying in town, coming home well after midnight, and sleeping late in the morning, this is not the right place for you. But if you enjoy tranquil sunrises, sporty days, and quiet starry nights, you'll like it. QUIET HOURS: 11 pm-6 am. Sound travels far on the laguna! We try to be considerate of our neighbors and expect guests to do so as well. ACCESS: The dirt roads from the highway to the house may seem daunting but are passable by any passenger vehicle, slowly. Many see the bumpiness as a benefit, as it limits traffic and adds to the remote jungle atmosphere. NOISE: The selva is tranquil but not always quiet! Bacalar's 250+ species of birds are part of our sonic background, especially at dawn! ;-) Parrots, limpkins, snail kites, chachalacas, the occasional toucan--and a neighborhood rooster--are our morning music. We have some neighbors nearby, so you will hear others enjoying the laguna. SMOKING: Smoking is allowed outdoors only and, of course, all butts must be disposed of properly (NOT in the grass or laguna!) and promptly. ABOUT BACALAR. . . . . . . 7 TIPS & 1 WARNING 7 TIPS to PRESERVE THIS FRAGILE ENVIRONMENT, best practices that are promoted by scientists, government authorities, and concerned locals: 1. DON'T TOUCH STROMATOLITES. Ever. 2. DON'T USE SUNSCREEN *in the water*, not even biodegradable. Use swim clothes! 3. DON'T EXFOLIATE. The fake "Mayan spa treatment" is forbidden. 4. DON'T PEE IN THE WATER. Go before you get in. 5. DON'T PLAY MUSIC LOUD. Respect the birds and your neighbors. 6. LEAVE SNAILS ALONE. They are key to the lagoon's equilibrium. 7. LEAVE NO TRACE. Take your garbage with you! 1 WARNING: Give the Lake a Break Day is EVERY Wednesday. The Ecology and Environment Directorate, the Captain of the Port, and the lancheros have agreed to make Wednesdays a no-navigation day--no motorboats, no sailboats, no kayaks, no paddleboards, no jetskis, no waterbikes... no watercraft of any kind. Plan your visit accordingly!
