Other things to note Ivesley cottage is set in the peaceful rural village of Waterhouses 6.5 miles from the beautiful historic cathedral city of Durham. There is a children’s park in the centre of Waterhouses, a community centre that hold playgroups three days a week, cubs and scouts clubs and various other classes. There is also a football ground where the northern league team Esh Winning AFC play in this peaceful village. Waterhouses has a Christian church called Saint Paul's, which has a weekly Sunday service were all are welcome. The Cottage is situated at top of the Deerness Valley walk, boasting some of the most beautiful scenic walks the countryside offers that includes an amazing two hour walk that will take you right into the heart of of Durham city itself. The cottage is within easy reach of the surrounding cities such as Sunderland and Newcastle which have many amenities such as shopping centres, bars, restaurants and entertainment facilities. It has a local pub called the Blackhorse which is only two minutes away (Dog Friendly) serving a selection alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, large television screen and has an open log fire and outside smoking area . There is also other near by pubs. The Stags Head pub is a friendly family run pub (Dog Friendly), only ten minute walk into Esh Winning, There is also an outside seating area. The Royal Oak at Cornsay Colliery is also a family run pub and is a ten minute drive, also serving great food daily and Sunday lunches. There is also seating outside the pub and a play park directly over the road from the pub. Esh Winning also has a fantastic Butchers called Deerness Valley Meats and equally fantastic bakery called Dents both owned by local friendly proprietors. There are three hair salons and a gents barbers in the village, two fish shops, two Chinese takeaways, a pizza shop, chemist, two local supermarkets one of which has a post office and a general store. There is a doctors surgery and a children play park directly behind. There are also many attractions close at hand such as Beamish Open air museum, Kynren, Hall Hill Farm, Durham luminaire, Metro Radio arena, the Metro Centre, the Sage and Sunderland Illuminations There is a fabulous garden centre only five minutes away just before the village of Lanchester, which is home to a reptile house, birds of prey, duck pond and a children’s play are. It has a fantastic gift shop that also sells fresh food produce and a restaurant/cafe that has a wide selection of delicious food. In the village of Lanchester there are also numerous pubs serving good food, cafes, takeaways and shops (including a pet shop). Langley Park is another close village, which is home to Diggerland where children young and old alike can ride on real diggers. There is numerous shops, cafes, take aways and hair salons.
