Founded by the Phoenicians between the 8th and 6th centuries B.C., with one of the city's original walls still standing, Tavira was constantly disputed by various peoples due to its geographical location, proximity to Spain and its fishing port, and was subsequently dominated by the Romans and Moors. The city would only be conquered by Christians in 1242 by the Order of Santiago, a religious and military order in charge of fighting against the Moorish occupation in the Iberian Peninsula as well as protecting the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago. Tavira would become the most prosperous city in the Algarve during the Portuguese Discoveries of the 15th and 16th centuries, being strategically well positioned to assist in the defense of the Portuguese squares of North Africa.
