The space Cornwallis Cottage in Appledore, North Devon- The Cottage has three beautifully styled bedrooms sleeping up to six guests. The cottage is made for couples, friends and families coming together. With spaces to sit and read, gather, dine and celebrate, there is room for both shared moments and quieter ones. Equally inviting for a group of six or a more indulgent stay for two, Cornwallis gives you space to be together, and space to simply be. Venture a little further and you’ll discover the South West Coast Path, expansive sandy surf beaches and picturesque villages waiting to be explored. Whether you're a keen walker, cycler, water babe or simply love the charm of a traditional seaside village, Cornwallis Cottage is perfectly placed. Best of all, you can leave the car and enjoy the very best of Appledore and the coast on foot. Appledore and Bideford are also vibrant creative hubs, rich in artistic talent, craftsmanship and inspiration. Galleries and numerous creative day courses can be viewed and booked close by. ARRIVE AND DISCOVER Open the front door and step into a welcoming little porch, where a stable door opens into the cottage beyond. Underfoot, colourful Victorian tiles set the tone for this characterful and much-loved home. From here, the cottage unfolds room by room, each with its own atmosphere and charm. KITCHEN At the heart of the cottage, a wonderful open plan kitchen, floored in slate with a range of rustic painted wooden cabinetry, brass details and a retro style dining table seating six. Well equipped with all the modern conveniences, it's the perfect place for relaxed brunches, long lunches and cosy suppers. At the other end, relaxed seating gathered around a cracking fire creates a wonderful warm, social space. The true heart of the home , made for sharing food, stories and unhurried time together. FRONT SITTING ROOM An inviting sitting room wrapped in deep, moody green walls, soft linen furnishings and the gentle glow of a wood burning fire. A cosy cocoon to retreat to after a day exploring the coast. The shelves filled with a tempting collection of books, games and reading delights make this the perfect spot to curl up for a quiet afternoon or settle in for a relaxed evening when the weather turns. ATTIC SUITE From the 1st floor landing, stairs lead up into a stunning vaulted super-king suite, tucked away beneath the eaves. With far-reaching panoramic views across rooftops towards the estuary, Instow and the sea beyond, this is a truly special room. Two large double-glazed windows at the foot of the bed frame the ever-changing view, from early morning light to the shifting colours of the tide. A bedroom made for lingering mornings, slow starts and a good book, where you can lie back and watch the landscape change with the ebb and flow of the estuary. Off the bedroom a shower room, completes this suite. Each bedroom has been thoughtfully designed for comfort, with sumptuous mattresses dressed in soft Egyptian cotton linens, pretty coloured bedspreads or cosy wool blankets. An eclectic mix of contemporary pieces and vintage furnishings add character and charm, creating spaces that feel both relaxed and indulgent. FIRST FLOOR Two beautifully appointed bedrooms share a generous family bathroom, complete with a large walk-in shower and separate bath. At the front of the house, a bright, south-facing king bedroom enjoys a glimpse towards the estuary through an almost floor-to-ceiling wooden sash window. Painted wooden floors, fluffy rugs and a contemporary gas fire set into the chimney breast add to the calm and serenity of this beautiful room. A discreet wall mounted TV in this room offers the option of a quiet evening alone. Overlooking the garden at the rear is a charming twin bedroom, perfect for children or friends. On request, the beds can be made into a sumptuous super-king, creating an equally special retreat for an additional couple. Throughout the cottage, every bedroom has been designed to the same exceptional standard, so whichever room you choose, you can expect the same indulgent comfort, beautiful linens and thoughtful details. No compromises, just a wonderfully restful place to sleep. SECURE WALLED GARDEN To the rear of the cottage, a beautiful sunny walled garden provides a private haven for outdoor living. Partly slate-paved, lawned and decked, it’s softly lit with festoon lights and furnished with a welcoming outdoor seating area and dining table, perfect for alfresco lunches, leisurely morning coffees or drinks as the sun begins to set. For those arriving with bikes, a side gate from Alpha Place leads through to the garden via a few steps, making it easy to bring bikes into the secure garden. To the front of the cottage, a small sunny terrace with café-style seating offers another lovely little spot to sit with the morning papers and a cup of coffee, watching village life go by. Further logs can be bought. Starter coffee pods. salt/pepper, foil and spay oil. HOUSE POSITION Cornwallis Cottage overlooks a quiet, pedestrian-only cobbled lane, with cottage gardens opposite. Tucked away on Alpha Place, the cottage is just a five-minute stroll downhill to the quay and water’s edge. Appledore is a picturesque village, steeped in seafaring history. Independent cafés, pubs, restaurants and delis are dotted amongst the charming old cottages and along the quayside, making it wonderfully easy to wander out for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a drink without needing to get in the car. There are no chains or high streets here, just a lovely collection of independent places with plenty of character. For a day at the beach, catch the little boat from Appledore Quay across the estuary to the sandy shores of Instow, or follow the estuary around to Westward Ho! or grey Sands beach by foot, bike or car, with the beach around 1.5 miles away. For walkers and cyclists, Northam Burrows is a wonderful nearby escape. This beautiful semi-wild landscape of grassy plains, salt marshes and sand dunes is home to wild horses and is intertwined with the Royal North Devon Golf Club, one of the oldest golf courses in England. Beyond it lies the sweeping sands of Westward Ho! Beach. With over two kilometres of golden sand, Westward Ho! is perfect for surfing, bodyboarding, swimming and long beach walks. There’s a café tucked into the dunes towards Appledore, as well as a large car park for easy access. And if you’re keen to explore further afield, some of North Devon’s most beautiful beaches, including Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe, are all within easy reach. If paddle boarding, kayaking or canoeing is more your thing, the river Torridge around neighbouring Bideford, offers calm, scenic tidal routes to explore. A NOTE ABOUT ACCESS Cornwallis Cottage is a characterful older cottage, with a few steps throughout the property. At the front, two wide steps lead up to the main entrance. The side garden gate has five steps leading up into the garden, with a further couple of steps down to the back door. Inside the cottage, there is a step from the kitchen into the utility room, and a step down from the landing into the first-floor family bathroom. Like most properties in Appledore the stairs to the 1st floor are slightly steeper than regulation, with a higher step, as these stairs are original. Guest access We will send guests further details a couple of weeks before the stay, which include access and parking suggestions. Also our recommendations for food Deliveries, restaurants and local stores, to help you plan ahead. Other things to note We are delighted to be able to share our home with others. We have been running holiday lets for over 14 years. We pride ourselves in offering our guests a stay with all the comforts and luxuries that help make holidays extra special. Other details we like our guests to note: Access from the front door, there are two small wide steps from the cobbled lane into the house. Rear access through our garden gate, there are 6 stone steps that lead you from the gate straight up into the garden, with a low wall above. Then from the grass area of the garden towards the patio doors there are a further two steps, one down to the patio and a further towards the patio doors. The stairs to the 1st floor are slightly steeper than regulation, with a higher step, as these stairs are original. There is a low wall behind the bed in the attic bedroom, with the stairwell the other side. PARKING - there is no private parking, however there is free road parking and a car park on the Quay close by. DOGS - We welcome one well behaved dog downstairs.
