You will have full access to the yard but please don’t enter the fenced off fields or the barns. If you want to visit with the horses, please let us know and we will escort you. This is for your safety and theirs. Dog Greetings – we have five dogs who enthusiastically greet any visitors by running at top speed to you and barking. They are just letting us know you are there, sometimes loudly. Getting them NOT to jump up has been a work in progress, so bear with us as they tend to get very friendly. There is a gate at the bottom of your porch so they can’t go up and bother you with kisses. If you want to go for a hike on the mountain, please go to the end of the driveway walk to the right down the road. It is a beautiful walk that is mostly shaded on a gravel and dirt “road” (more like a path). There are lots of things close to the The Love Nest. Here’s a small sampling: • Wineries – within three miles you’ll run into (5) wineries. Within ten miles there are (14) of them all around us. Eat, drink, and be merry my friends because you are in the heart of wine and horse country! • Hiking – Just across the road there are two entrances to G. F. Thompson Wildlife Management Area (4000 acres of hiking and fishing) including part of the Appalachian Trail (1 mile either direction). Five miles away is Sky Meadows State Park with 22 miles of trails as well as horseback riding trails and fishing. At Shenandoah National Park (27 miles) there are a bunch of hiking trails ranging from the novice (moderate 1-hour hikes) to expert (strenuous 7-hour hikes!) • Restaurants – there are some great dining options less than 20 minutes away including: the famous Apple House for breakfast (Linden), Hunter’s Head Tavern (Upperville), Red Fox Inn & Tavern (Middleburg), Salamander (Middleburg), L’Auberge Provençale (Boyce), Field & Main (Marshall), Red Bar Sushi (Middleburg), Best Thai Kitchen (Middleburg), The Melting Pot (Front Royal), The Red Truck Bakery (Marshall) • Towns / Shopping – Middleburg, old town Winchester, old town Warrenton, The Plains, and Marshall • Equestrian Events – Great Meadows International Gold Cup (The Plains), polo (The Plains), point to point races (Upperville, The Plains, Leesburg, Middleburg, Glenwood Park, Ben Venue, Berryville), Charlestown Races (35 miles), Upperville Colt & Horse Show (Upperville) – oldest horse show in the US, • Fun – Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races (35 miles), white water rafting (41 miles), Luray Caverns (39 miles), Pick our Own peaches, apples, strawberries, and more (2 miles, multiple orchards) • Historical / Scenic – Shenandoah National Park and enjoy the views driving Skyline Drive for 105 miles along the Blue Ridge Parkway (might even see a bear or three), State Arboretum of Virginia (Boyce) and their Ginko trees, Manassas Battlefield, Harpers Ferry • Day Trip Adventures – Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, Monticello, Advar-Hazy Center Air and Space Museum, Natural Bridge of Virginia, Frontier Culture Museum (living museum), National Firearms Museum, National Museum of the Marine Corp, American Shakespeare Center (theater), Wolf Trap (concerts), Washington DC & Georgetown Other things to note The Love Nest is in the country so here’s a list of things you might encounter while here (some more common than others): • Animals – Dog, Cat, Horse, Deer, Fox, Squirrel, Fox Squirrel, Chipmunk, Raccoon, Groundhog, Frog, Mice, Voles, Moles, Skunk, Possum, Box Turtle, Black Snake, Bear, Coyote • Birds – American Goldfinch, Bald Eagle, Barn Swallow, Black Vulture, Blue Bird, Blue Jay, Broad-Winged Hawk, Brown Thrasher, Canadian Goose, Cardinal, Cowbird, Crow, Dark-eyed Junco, Grackle, Great Horned Owl, House Finch, House Sparrow, House Wren, Mockingbird, Northern Flicker, Oriole, Pileated Woodpecker, Quail, Raven, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Redheaded Woodpecker, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-Shouldered Hawk, Red-winged Blackbird, Robin, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, Ruby Throated Hummingbird, Starling, Tree Swallow, Tufted Titmouse, Turkey, Turkey Vulture • Flying Things / Insects – Ant, Bat, Bee, Bugs, Butterfly, Dragon Fly, Fly, Hornet, Ladybug, Mosquito, Moth, Praying Mantis, Spider, Stink Bug, Tick, Walking Stick If you have phobias of different animals, bugs, or things that go hop in the night, then perhaps country living is not for you. On the other hand, if the possibility of seeing these things excites you, then you’ve come to the right place! If you have questions regarding how common the animals, birds, flying things, and insects are or when is the best time to see them at The Nest, please email us with questions. We cannot control nature (stink bugs, flies, lady bugs, ants, etc) and we do not provide refunds for acts of nature which is beyond our control, to include a few stink bugs or ladybugs that may get inside the home. Some other important notes: No Children or Infants (must be 20+) – The Love Nest is located on a second floor with a porch and is a farm. In addition, the décor is not childproof. Wifi – there is no broadband out here in the mountains Cellphone Reception – with many cellphone towers located on the mountain ridge to the west, cellphone reception at The Nest is never a problem No Smoking, hookah, or Vapes in the Apartment or on the premises. This is a working farm with barns and hay. Thank you No Pets – we have plenty of four-legged friends for you to meet on the farm (5 dogs, 1 cat, 3 horses) Parking – your spot is reserved for you in front of the tall barn right behind the F250 pickup)! No electric car charging on premises. Fenced in fields and inside barns are not to be entered without an escort. If you want to visit text us and give us a shout! Dog Greetings – we have five dogs who enthusiastically greet any visitors by running at top speed to you and barking. They are just letting us know you are there, sometimes loudly. Getting them NOT to jump up has been a work in progress, so bear with us as they tend to get “too friendly”. Security Cameras – our security cameras cover the majority of our fields and the driveway to monitor our horses "Off" Bug Spray & Sunscreen - the cans are on the windowsill in the kitchen for you to use. Please return them back to the window if you use them. If you take the bottles by accident, you will be charged $20. Contactless Check-in and Check-out – you can check in anytime after 3PM and check-out is 11AM Wind – at 1000’ elevation there is always a soft breeze in the summer. There are some nights during the year that can get quite windy, so if the sound of wind bothers your sleep, we suggest you consider bringing ear plugs if you know it is going to be very windy. Non-functional Intercom system - the old intercom system hasn't worked for over a decade and is disconnected. The fireplace is for ambiance only, not for heating. Please do not take screen off, the glass off, or touch anything except for turning on and turning off the switch on the wall to the right of the fireplace. If the fireplace is not working, I will assume you changed the settings, messed with it, and it has burned out, and you will have to pay for parts and labor to fix (last time $1000). If you need the heat turned up in the Love Nest, please text or call me. It is imperative that you do not touch anything about the fireplace for your safety and ours. Please shut off the fireplace and lights when not using or not home. Please close the windows when you are away. Thank you so much! Using the Black Out Shades - they are very large and very easy to use. There are instructions on how to use them: to the right of the bed under the glass and the makeup / writing table with a picture diagram and explanation. Please read these instructions carefully. They are not to be pulled down straight as this could break them. Instead pull the cord close to the shade to the left and you will hear a snap unlocking then you can lower it down. No garbage disposal, so please dispose of food in the garbage. Please put any cooking grease in the garbage and not down the sink. We also have a septic system, nothing should go into the toilet but toilet paper (no wipes of any kind). Thank you!
