What to do and see – nearby: The area of the municipality of Lovinac includes the highest peaks of the Paklenica National Park, such as the special reserve "Sveto brdo" and a large part of the Velebit Nature Park. In the immediate vicinity there is the Opsenica stream and a swimming lake. There are several cycling routes in the vicinity, and for those who want to hike but short and not too demanding routes there is the ascent to Zir, while for more demanding hiking there is Velebit and the ascent to the Holy Hill. Zir is a mountain 850 m high and is located near the town of Kik in the Municipality of Lovinac (N 44° 25' 48.7 E 15° 36' 51.5). Zir is a mountain that is part of the Lika midlands, a series of elevations that run parallel to Velebit. The Lika midlands are built of limestone, the former seabed, and therefore there are many cavities - caves and pits. It rose like the entire Dinarides - by the collision of the Adriatic microplate (which separated from the African) with the Eurasian. Inside the mountain itself there is a 350 m long cave with a lake. From the top of Zir, there is an open view in all directions. There are two legends about the origin of its name. The first is that the mountain served as an observation post during the Turkish conquests. The top of Zir was an ideal place to control the Ličko polje and the Udbina-Ploča-Mogorić-Ribnik road, which was the most important road at the time. The second legend says that with its beauty it always attracted the eyes of passengers, that is, it provoked - staring. The people also sang songs about Zir. Mount Zir is included as a checkpoint in the Croatian mountain hiking trail and the Lika mountain pearls trail. The Majstorska road is a state road in Croatia and was the first modern road link between southern and northern Croatia. It was officially opened on October 4, 1832. The Master Road is a trans-Velebit road that connected Sveti Rok in Lika via Mali Alan with Obrovac in Dalmatia. Along the then new Velebit transversal, in addition to trade, postal traffic between Vienna and Zadar also took place. Today, the road across Tulovi Gredi is a unique panoramic road, the most beautiful mountain road from which beautiful views of spectacular rocks and the Zadar hinterland and sea open at the same time. The Majstorska Road has been under the protection of the Ministry of Culture since the end of 2007 as a historical road and cultural asset, which prevented the attempt to asphalt it. There is also the Church of St. Francis. In 1832, the Austrian Emperor Francis II built the Church of St. Francis in Podprag in memory of the newly built road. Cerovac Caves are the largest cave complex in Croatia. They are located four kilometers southwest of Gračac, on the northeastern slope of the Velebit hill Crnopac (1403 m), in the southern part of the Velebit Nature Park. Zrmanja springs below the mountain Poštak in the southern part of Lika, and flows into the Novigrad Sea 12 kilometers from Obrovac. It is navigable from Obrovac to the estuary. The most significant tributary is Krupa. It is 69 km long and has one of the most beautiful river canyons. Krupa Monastery is located along the river of the same name, the largest tributary of the Zrmanja River. There are numerous legends about the foundation of the monastery that have not been fully established historically, which is why it is difficult to talk about the exact time of its foundation (13th century). The constant development and prosperity of the monastery and the extension of the monastery buildings occurred during the 18th century. The monastery got its present appearance during the extension in 1855. The monastery church was also renovated in the same year. There are four national parks nearby: Paklenica National Park Plitvice Lakes National Park NP Krka Velebit National Park Zadar is 70 km away Gospić is 30 km away Additional activities nearby: Rizvan City Adventure and Excursion Center Rafting on Zrmanja Nikola Tesla Memorial Center Free time: For those who like fresh summer nights, this is an ideal location, and if you want to swim in the sea, in just 20 minutes by highway you will reach the sea. The Feast of St. Michael on September 29th is traditionally the biggest celebration in Lovinac.
