Description

Situated metres from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with the Carew river running along the bottom of the back garden, and Carew Castle a stone’s throw away, this unique 1870’s detached stone cottage has been carefully restored into a comfortable home-from-home, combining traditional features; exposed and lime-rendered stone walls, slate flag-stones, sash windows with contemporary design touches including oak parquet floors and locally crafted up-cycled furniture. The space This property is a PET-FREE home that boasts four bedrooms, three upstairs (one double and two twin), one downstairs (double) and can sleep eight guests. There are four bathrooms; one upstairs en-suite, one upstairs main bathroom with a roll-top bath and hand-held shower, one downstairs en-suite with shower, and one downstairs bathroom with a shower. Outdoors, there is a spacious garden and seating in the front with splendid views of the Flemish Chimney (see pictures) and a second large lawn with patio, outdoor dining and BBQ available at the rear of the house with wonderful river views. Please be aware that there is a VERY STEEP BANK at the rear which is NOT SUITABLE for children or adults scrambling down and there is no access at the bottom to the river. There is ample free parking for four cars on the driveway. Upon entrance to the cottage, there is a slate flag-stone small hallway which leads off on the left, to a spacious, well equipped farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room at the heart of the house with seating for eight. On the right is a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and shower and view of the front garden and Flemish chimney. Ahead is a STEEPER THAN USUAL staircase with handrails either side, leading to the three upstairs bedrooms and second family bathroom. If you have mobility issues or young children this house is likely to be unsuitable for you. The living room sits just off the kitchen with two large sofas and a chaise-longue to relax and soak up the river-views or enjoy the smart TV. French double doors open out onto a large secluded patio and lawn, with a steep bank (not accessible) down to the river. Downstairs also offers a family bathroom with a shower, toilet and a utility room with a washing machine, tumble dryer and large Belfast sink - perfect to rinse out swim-wear after a day at the beach. Heading upstairs you will find three bedrooms. One of these is a double with a great view of the front garden and Flemish chimney and the remaining two are beautiful twin rooms, one of which also has views of the chimney and front garden and the other has floor to ceiling windows with views of the ever-changing river and wildlife including two nesting swans in the Spring. Please be aware that there is RESTRICTED HEIGHT at one end of this room. The second bathroom is also situated on the first floor offering a roll-top bath, and hand-held shower. Guest access The entire house is for your exclusive use. As you approach the house, there is ample parking in the driveway to the right-hand side of the house. We share the large flat space at the top of the drive with our neighbour so we respectfully ask our guests not to park in front of the blue cottage next door and to leave space for cars to be able to pass through. Other things to note Conveniently located at the end of the lane, with great views of the castle is the Carew Inn, a cozy pub which serves a wide range of food and has a large summer outdoor dining area. There is also a well-stocked village shop a two minute walk away. Prominently situated in front of the house, on the roadside is a historic landmark - a rare, large conical chimney. Known as ‘Flemish Chimneys’, these were part of the architectural style of medieval and early modern Pembrokeshire and this is one of the few remaining. During the 20th century, it was used as a communal bake house until 1927 and during World War II two local families used it as a shelter from German air-raids. This house was formerly part of the Carew Estate. The Castle is one of Wales’ most evocative and much painted by the Romantic artists including JMW Turner. The original house was connected at the gable end to the Flemish Chimney. At some point in the late 1800’s it was demolished and the current cottage was built in 1870. It served as the village ‘Police Cottage’ until the late 1950’s, when it became a Bed and Breakfast and local shop with summer tea dances held in the garden until the 1990’s.
