River House - Private cottage on Chilkat River

River House is a charming, hand-built cottage at the mouth of the Chilkat River, in Haines, Alaska. It has stupendous views of the river with 6,000 foot mountains beyond. There are trails leading up and down the river right out the front door. Enjoy this tranquil paradise, wake to birdsong, and watch wildlife right from the porch. Riverhouse is close to town, yet far enough away to escape the hustle and bustle. The two units can be rented together or separately with individual entrances. The upper unit includes the top two floors. The top floor is a loft queen bedroom, reached by a spiral staircase from the middle (main) floor. The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen with a living area, a dining area, and a full bath. The ground floor apartment has a spacious bedroom, a mini-kitchen, an eating area and a washroom with a shower, washer, and dryer. You can rent the whole cottage, the top two floors, or the ground floor. The entire cottage sleeps up to 6. There are two queen beds and two sleeping mattresses available to put in either unit. River House is situated at the mouth of the Chilkat River, where the fresh-water flows into the salt water of Chilkat Inlet. The cottage has spectacular views of the river and ocean and the dramatic mountains beyond. Wildlife abounds. Bears, moose, mountain goats, lynx, wolverines, and wolves have all been spotted. The upper unit has a spotting scope for viewing. The spring bird migration (shorebirds and waterfowl) peaks about mid-May. Eagles are there year round. Gulls, terns, and eagles fill the skies and cover the river bars in spring when the "hooligan" (euchalon) run. There are trails leading up and down the river and the river flats are wonderful for exploring. The tides are extreme, with as much as 24 feet between high and low. You'll be best off with a car, although you can walk to town from River House. There are many trails throughout Haines. During the summer months, there are several restaurants to enjoy. There is a brewery, a distillery, a salmon smokery, a cannery, and many great galleries and museums to wander through. The Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds hosts the set from the movie "White Fang" which houses a couple of eateries, massage studios, and shops. Our disc golf course is also on the Fairgrounds. The whole house is great for two couples, a family, or groups of friends. The Upper unit is very comfortable for a couple, a small family, or good friends. It has a small wood stove (not needed to heat the space, but cozy when used). The sweet window seat in the loft room is available for sleeping on as well. That unit's kitchen is fully equipped, including dishes, table linens, pots and pans, garlic press, wine opener, and everything else you'd need. The dining table expands to seat six. The lower unit is comfortable for a couple or small family, or friends. It has a small fridge, a gas ring, a microwave, an electric kettle, a toaster, pots, pans, and dishes.
