We had a one level 4 bdrm/3bath home on a 1/2 acre (above street level) and we converted the 3bdrm/2bth wing of the house to a 2bdrm/2bth ADU with a full kitchen/sitting room with a 42” TV; and a separate entrance on the west side of the house completely away from our side. There is a custom walnut fire-sealed door in the unit that gives us the option to close off the second bedroom and bathroom when it is rented as a 1bdrm/1bth unit. We insulated the walls and double-insulated the wall between our living room and the ADU; and added a second fire-sealed door. We also added insulation and a third fire-sealed door to close off the rest of our own space. When the ADU is rented we keep all three fire-seals doors closed.
