The lake covers an area of 12.5 km² and is nestled between the Dammer and the Stemweder mountains. On the east side of the Dummmer lie the main holiday resorts Hüde and Lembruch. They impress with their maritime charm and have a lot to offer for the recreation-seeking guest. Along the kilometre-long dike promenade, the tourist leisure activities leave nothing to be desired. On the west bank is the smaller Olgahafen, which belongs to Dümmerlohausen. Bike tours along the lake, windsurfing, stand up paddling, mountain biking or hiking in the woods, many reasons to take a vacation at Dümmer. In the Stemweder and in the Dammer mountains there are a variety of designated hiking trails to explore. The Dümmer is the centre of the Dümmer Nature Park of the same name and is surrounded by extensive low moors and wet meadows. In the Dümmer Museum, visitors are taught nature conservation, bird science and cultural landscape history in a variety of ways. The park is also an international bird sanctuary. More than 275 species of birds live here. Every year, the so-called Dümmerbrand takes place at the Dümmer.
