(summer only) Built in 1907 by William Sauers, the Sauerdough Lodging building has served many purposes over the years. It originally housed the Seward Commercial Co. general store, with a town meeting hall upstairs. During the Roaring ’20s, the building was used as a brothel. It is presently the home of The Sea Bean café downstairs and rental apartments upstairs. The five apartments are beautifully restored, with original hardwood floors, clawfoot tubs, original built-in cabinetry, high ceilings and vintage kitchens with modern appliances. In a town that was hit hard by the 1964 earthquake, few original buildings have stood the test of time, and fewer still feature such comfortable accommodations. We offer our guests the unique opportunity to experience Seward’s history without sacrificing any of the conveniences you expect while traveling. Entire apartment, and cafe downstairs We try to say hi to all guests during their stay, and are always just a text or call away. Help is also available at the cafe downstairs during business hours. We also have a wine/social hour nightly, from 5-6 p.m. during our summer season (approx. mid-May to mid-Sept) for all our guests. We are located on the main block of downtown Seward, on Fourth Ave, between Adams and Washington. Shops, restaurants, bars, the library, community museum, waterfront, kayak rentals, and the Alaska SeaLife Center are all at your fingertips (or feet). The best part about Seward is how foot and bike friendly it is- you can walk or bike everywhere! The waterfront bike path is beautiful, and takes you to the harbor. If you don't feel like walking/biking, the city operates a free shuttle during the summer that stops at various points around Seward, including downtown and the harbor. The closest stop to us is about half a block away. Our apartments are located on the second floor, which is only accessed by stairs (see photo in our photo section). We apologize, but we do not have an elevator. We'd be glad to help you up the stairs with your luggage, if you give us a call or text first!
