The Bakery building was purchased by Dr. Sidney Paul Smith III and his family on June 23, 2000. The meticulous renovation ensured the original character of the building was maintained while incorporating modern amenities to create a sustainable home for family and friends to enjoy. The space The property features 3 bedroom and 2 baths. The primary bedroom features a queen bed and attached bathroom with soaking tub. The second bedroom has 2 twin beds and attached bathroom with shower stall. The third bedroom features multiple trundle and bunk beds with a 2 queen beds and 6 twin beds. PLEASE NOTE: The Bakery has an open ceiling and sound does carry. However, white noise/sound machines are supplied in the sleep rooms for your convenience and this has not been as issue for past guests. The restoration and renovation of The Bakery is respectfully dedicated to the brave and courageous men and women who have served our country. The large dining room table made from the original 1925 Fort Bakery doors features photos of the renovation. The interior brick walls are also original to the building and reveal The Bakery’s historical story with framed letters and military items to enjoy. The original furnaces from the bakery ovens are featured as light fixtures above the dining room table. There’s even a secret spot framed in the wooden floor where “Willie, the Baker” signed his name in the cement poured many, many years ago! *Please note the fireplaces are not accessible for liability reasons.* A must-see for first-time guests is the Tybee Lighthouse and the quiet, relaxing North beach area of Tybee Island, both within walking distance. The Fort Screven Bakery is located 20-30 minutes from Downtown Savannah where majestic, moss draped oak trees and cobblestone streets will guide your visit to the beautiful squares, parks and River Street shopping district. As a testament to the importance of preserving historical sites, the Smith family have renovated an additional historic site known as the former “The Cohen’s Old Man’s Retreat” located at 5715 Skidaway Road, a 20-30 minute drive from Tybee Island. The building served as a nursing home for male residents for over 50 years, closing in the 1980s due to restricted state funding. Fast forward a few decades and the majestic building and spacious 5 acre property is now home to a full service restaurant, local artisan gift market, sweet treat bakery, special event hall and 10 charming AirBnB one bedroom, one bathroom cottages with fully appointed kitchens.
