School was never quite like this! When you're ready to take a break and escape to Bayfield, Recess at the historic School House Condominiums is just too cool for school! This gorgeous condo occupies what was one of Bayfield’s original schools, beautifully renovated to offer modern amenities while preserving the architectural features of the original building. This spacious unit combines vintage architecture with gorgeous modern finishes, views of the lake, original art & more! Unit Overview The unit features a main floor (which is on the second story of the building) that houses the open plan living/dining/kitchen spaces, the primary bedroom with en suite bath (complete with claw-foot soaking tub!), secondary bedroom, and another full bathroom. The kitchen has all stainless appliances, quartz countertops, and plenty of room to cook up meals to enjoy on the dining room table or the sunporch. You will love the sunporch which has plenty of comfy seating, another dining table, and those amazing lake views! The condo's living room has ample comfortable seating organized around the fireplace. Adjacent to the living area is the dining table with seating for four. There's also bar stool seating at the kitchen island. We especially love how much light comes in through the windows that extend the length of the unit's great room. There is a 2nd level in the home, however due to fire code restrictions, it is unavailable for guest use. Recess also includes use of the building’s outdoor patio & pergola, complete with a grill, comfy chairs, and views. The condo also has a single stall garage for your use during your stay. NOTE: The sunroom is NOT heated and thus may not be too enjoyable in the winter months. Neighborhood Overview The School House is located in a quiet part of Bayfield (though full disclosure - there is a historic church across the street that may have church bells ringing on Sundays & holidays). It’s tucked away from the commercial district, but walkable distance or a short drive to the ferry landing, shops, and restaurants. Location & Transit Info Bayfield is a very walkable city, so your best bet is on foot. Off street parking in the unit's garage for one car. Plenty of street parking available, except during Applefest weekend in October. Less than 15 minute drive to Mt. Ashwabay ski hill, Big Top Chautauqua, hiking trails, beaches, and more. Public transportation on the peninsula is provided by the Bay Area Rural Transit (BART), more information can be found on their website. An EV charging station is located in the parking lot on the corner of Washington Ave. and E. 6th St. in Washburn. The following shuttles and ferries are also accessible on foot from Reiten Boatyard: - The Madeline Island Ferry will take you out to Madeline Island and runs regularly during the late spring, summer, fall, and much of the winter. - The BART Bus runs regularly through Bayfield and around Chequamegon Bay for a modest fee. - Big Top Chautauqua runs shuttles for most of for their concerts and events. History of Recess The coolest thing about this property is the story behind it. The father of one of the current owners was a teacher at the School House. Not only was he a teacher, his classroom was in the very same space the condo now occupies! History is amazing, isn't it?
