Teutonic Castle – 200 m The Teutonic Castle in Malbork is the largest Gothic castle complex not only in Europe, but also in the world. It was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, and for centuries it was the seat of, among others, the great masters of the Teutonic Order, the rulers of Prussia and the kings of the Kingdom of Poland. The building is divided into three parts: the High Castle (with a huge representative hall, utility rooms, a church), the Middle Castle (constituting the palace's residential interiors) and the Low Castle (mainly external fortifications, towers, defensive fortifications). 2. The "Siege of Malbork" re-enactment One of the most interesting events that take place at the Castle in Malbork is the cyclical, annual event "Siege of Malbork". Although the main part of the event is a re-enactment of the events that took place in 1410 between the armies of the Kingdom of Poland and the Teutonic Order, the event itself is full of numerous family attractions. Every year in July, fairs, workshops (including calligraphy, military art, archery), tournaments and various types of shows (including knightly, old dance shows, juggling shows, horse and artillery shows) take place here. There are numerous stands with hot and cold snacks, drinks and handicrafts at the Castle. History lovers will also find something for themselves: for several days of the festival, there are numerous lectures, workshops and lectures, where researchers and historians from all over Poland perform. 3. Church of St. John the Baptist – 190 m The Church of St. John the Baptist in Malbork is a modest, Gothic church that was built on the site of the thirteenth-century, the oldest temple in the city. Although the original church was destroyed in the mid-15th century during armed conflicts, the building that still exists today, was rebuilt several decades later. The brick building is characterized by a compact, massive structure, but its interior is particularly interesting, where you can admire, among others, bas-reliefs, Renaissance epitaphs, two magnificent altars and numerous sacred objects. 4. Nogat – cruises and canoeing An interesting family-friendly attraction in Malbork is the opportunity to sail on the Nogat - a river that flows right next to the magnificent Teutonic Castle. During the cruise, you can admire not only the majestic building, but also the Old Town in Malbork and the green corners and bird sanctuaries. The cruises start at the marina right next to the castle and last about 1 hour. 5. Dinosaur Park in Malbork DinoPark in Malbork is a great attraction for families with children. Its main part is an educational path with a length of 1350 meters, where more than 40 huge, moving models of ancient reptiles are located. However, there are many more attractions in DinoPark! You can see here, among others, Dragon Park, Fossil Museum and Cave Village. For the youngest, there is a vast square in the Land of Fun, and for the slightly older – shows in the 5D cinema, a rope park, an exhibition of 3D paintings and a laser obstacle course. A unique attraction of this place are the shows... of dinosaur training! They use the latest technology and robotics, thanks to which you can experience amazing effects and a great show, where the animator will try to tame the dinosaur. DinoPark in Malbork also hosts numerous cyclical events (such as Night Sightseeing, Space Battle, Witch Rally). The facility is perfectly adapted to the needs of people with disabilities and families with small children, and there are many places to rest and several catering facilities. 6. External Museum of Fortifications The External Museum of Fortifications in Malbork is a path that leads through the city, including the remains of the old defensive walls and fortifications. There are as many as twelve points on its route, including: Guardhouse, Arsenal, Pottery Tower, Stable and Latin School. During the trip, you can see, among others, part of the defensive walls or the place where the medieval market was once located, which was the center of social life and trade. On the path, there are multimedia points where films and presentations are broadcast, and the whole is made more attractive by the mascot of Malbork – Marianek – who tells the story of the city in a fun and simple way. A great advantage of sightseeing is not only the opportunity to supplement the knowledge about the city and the former defensive, but also the fact that this attraction is completely free for all participants of the trip. 7. Kwidzyn Castle Although the Castle in Malbork is certainly the most popular Teutonic building in the entire region, it is not the only defensive building from the Middle Ages. A little over 30 kilometers from Malbork is the beautiful Gothic Castle in Kwidzyn, which was built in the 14th century. An interesting fact is that the buildings include the world's longest arcade porch – a gdanisko at a height of several meters – which is over 50 meters long. In the Kwidzyn, you can see, among others, an almost entirely preserved chapel with wall paintings from the early 14th century, as well as a perfectly preserved 15th-century Teutonic bombard. The castle interiors now house a museum with rich collections of numismatics, porcelain, medieval and renaissance handicrafts, as well as ethnographic and faunistic exhibitions. An additional attraction for visitors is the archaeological exhibition, which features objects from the Stone Age. 8. Gniew Castle Lovers of architecture and sightseeing of historical buildings can also take a slightly longer trip to Gniew (about 45 km from Malbork), where there is another medieval castle, today serving as a luxury hotel. The large SPA & Wellness area deserves special mention, as well as saunas, swimming pools, whirlpools, water attractions for children and brine graduation towers, which can be used by guests of the facility. The hotel has luxurious, comfortable rooms, conference rooms and a restaurant that serves excellent Polish and European specialties. Gniew Castle also has plenty of attractions for the youngest – there are sports fields, a large outdoor playground, bike rental and a marina from which gondolas sail. 9. Boulevards in Tczew and bridges over the Vistula Just 20 kilometers from Malbork is Tczew – a small, atmospheric town that is famous for its beautiful Vistula boulevards. The promenades stretch on both sides of the Vistula River, along which there are restaurants, bars, resting places and playgrounds for children. A great attraction of the Vistula boulevards are the water trams, which regularly run between Tczew and Gniew. It is worth paying attention to the bridges on the Vistula River in Tczew and the surrounding area. The most important of these is the road bridge, which was built in the mid-nineteenth century and at that time was one of the longest bridges in the world (over 830 meters long). Although the Tczew bridge is on the list of world technical monuments, there is a slightly younger and less representative Knybawski Bridge in the area. There are also many other attractions in Tczew. It is worth visiting, among others, the Vistula Museum and the thirteenth-century Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In Tczew, there is also a Dutch windmill from the early 19th century, a more than a century-old water tower and a beautiful Old Town, which is the central part of the town. 10. Old Town in Elbląg The history of Elbląg dates back to 1237 - it was then that the city was founded by the first master of the Teutonic Order, Herman von Balk. Today, the Old Town of Elbląg impresses with its historic buildings. Interestingly, even the new buildings are maintained in the old style. Within the Old Town, there are many monuments, including the magnificent 13th-century Church of St. the perfectly preserved Market Gate (a remnant of the old fortifications and defensive walls) and the Church of the Holy Spirit. The so-called church path, a narrow alley between tenement houses, which connects three historic temples, also makes a great impression. The Old Town in Elbląg is also the center of social, cultural and commercial life: within its area there are shops, restaurants, museums, bars and beer gardens open in the summer season. After visiting the Old Town of Elbląg, it is worth visiting the local Archaeological and Historical Museum, which is located in the building of the former Teutonic castle. Among the thousands of exhibits, the oldest European glasses from the 15th century, the medieval giterna (a musical instrument, one of only three found in world history) and weapons and military equipment, the oldest of which are over 800 years old, certainly deserve to be distinguished. 11. Nowa Holandia Amusement Park The New Holland Amusement Park near Elbląg is an attraction that will delight not only the youngest tourists. It is home to the world's largest pneumatic slide in the shape of a huge lion, which is almost 30 meters high! There are many attractions for children and adults, such as an ecological educational path, a rope park with two routes of varying degrees of difficulty, two bird refuges (birdhouse and the Island of Flightless Birds), a playground for the youngest and several thematic islets that refer to the world's largest monuments (Moai Island and Stonehenge Island). The Island of Illusions, the Island of Monsters and the Village of the Vikings, where you can learn about the life of the former Scandinavian warriors, are also impressive. An interesting way to explore some of the places in New Holland is by water tram. The complex also has restaurants and small fast-food bars, places to rest and an intimate hotel. 12. Malbork City Museum Visiting Malbork cannot end without a visit to the Municipal Museum, which is located in a historic merchant villa. The museum specializes in temporary exhibitions, which present, among others, works of art, documents, antique everyday objects and photographs related to the history of the city and the culture of the entire region. It also hosts numerous lectures, meetings with artists, art experts and historians, as well as workshops for children and youth, cyclical events, festivals and fairs. 13. The fountain in Malbork is one of the city's biggest attractions. It is located in the center, right next to the promenade. It is distinguished by music shows and light illuminations organized in the season. Music shows take place at 12:05 p.m. (after the bugle call), 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The duration is about 15 minutes. Schedule of light shows: April 15 – May 31 at 8:30 p.m. (historical show) and 9:30 p.m. June 1 – July 31 at 9:00 p.m. (historical show) and 10:00 p.m. August 1 – 31 at 8:30 p.m. (historical show) and 10:00 p.m. September 1 – 30 at 9:00 p.m. (historical show) Note!
