Insects like the Sand Bite (Family Ceratopogonidae) which are endemic to the Caribbean are commonly known as no-see-ums, gnats, sand fleas, punkies, sand fly or bitten midgets. These tiny biting insects are barely visible to the naked eye, but their bites can be very annoying. The bite of a sand bites is actually a sting. The effects can be felt several hours after being bitten and are not harmful to human health. A small reddish or white welt, about the size of a freckle is a sure sign you have been bitten.
