This unique, historic log cabin in the Black Hills is centrally located and surrounded by forest - a perfect place to relax & recharge after a day of touring! Though rustic, the cabin is comfortable, having been updated w/running hot water, electricity, heat, appliances, cookware, linens, TV, sound system, and satellite WiFi. Take a beautiful hike from just outside the door, then pour yourself a beverage & relax by the fire, or snuggle up to watch one of the many DVDs. You will have full & private use of the entire cabin, deck, yard, fire pit, & grill - plus all the National Forest land you could want back behind the cabin! Deer and all sorts of birds will be your companions, along with squirrels and chipmunks. The hummingbirds will often hang out with you on the deck, so long as the feeder is there! Note that there are some bugs - like flies and wasps - and they do often get into the cabin; the squeamish may not find this rustic setting to be their cup of tea. Two lovely and scarcely used trails take off into the National Forest straight from the yard. The only other people you'll see up here are very occasional hikers or ATVs (usually less than one per week), and part-time neighbors about a "block" away (mostly on weekends). Though they do live in the Black Hills, we've never seen any predators up here (coyotes, foxes, bears, mountain lions, etc), even with dogs and cats about. There is also a second cabin with a queen bed, bathroom and kitchenette can be set up for 2 additional guests upon request (for an additional fee). You will do self check-in with the lockbox. I will respect your privacy 100% and will not be on site unless my presence is requested. Rapid Creek runs through town down to Pactola Lake, less than a mile down the road, which is an awesome spot for paddleboarding, canoeing, swimming, fishing, or just having a picnic. Silver City road itself is a beautiful drive, and passes by Jenny Gulch picnic area, the best spot to launch a paddle board or canoe onto Pactola. Silver City itself is really just a collection of cabins and homes; there are no amenities or services in town except for the Volunteer Fire Department and Community Center (which is only open for special events). Rapid Creek runs right through town, which is also great for a quick dip or some tubing when the water is not too high (swim at your own risk). The historic Gorman Cabin at the edge of town is neat, and the National Forest’s “Deerfield Trail” picks up at both edges of town - it runs along the creek for many miles beyond. From the trail there are beautiful views of granite and slate cliffs, as well as some darn good fishing. Rapid City, Hill City and Lead/Deadwood are all about 45 minutes from the cabin, as is Keystone and Mt. Rushmore. Sturgis, Crazy Horse, Custer, and Custer State Park are about 1 hour away. Three Forks, about 30-35 minutes away, is your closest stop for gas and snacks. There are also a few restaurants along Hwy 385 within 30 minutes from the cabin. See my “What to do Near Silver City” guidebook (here on Air BnB) for more details! Silver City is definitely off the beaten path, and you will need a reliable mode of transport. There is a short (<1 mile) gravel road leading to the cabin which is passable in any car and by motorcycle unless there is torrential rain or a lot of snow. Again, please be aware this is a rustic setting. There are bugs and wildlife, and no phone service. The nearest amenities - including food and fuel - are about 35 minutes away. As such, you’ll want to bring everything you need up with you - including fuel, food, and entertainment. Make sure you have at least 1/4 - 1/2 tank of gas before heading up the Silver City road. To the south, Three Forks (Country Store/Phillips 66) is the nearest gas station. To the east, it's Canyon Lake Common Cents in Rapid City. Since this is an older cabin, a couple of the doorways are a bit low - a little under 6 feet tall - so taller folks will need to watch your head! There is a supply of interesting books, games, music and movies for your perusal, but be sure to download any content ahead of time to read or watch or listen on your device! The satellite WiFi can be used for sending texts or phone calls (IF your phone has been set up to allow "WiFi Calling"), and *typically* works for video conferencing or streaming music, but is too slow for streaming movies. It occasionally (though not often) goes out, so be ready to entertain yourself “off grid” and without phone service if that happens! I keep extra supplies of common comfort and emergency items on hand, and can be reached by text or phone should unexpected needs arise, but please be prepared. The cabin is on septic, so care must be taken on what goes down the drain. The tap water is very high in rust, so you will NOT want to wash anything light-colored in the washing machine, and though there is a water filter (and I drink from it) it has NOT been tested and you should bring bottled water if that concerns you. Fire safety is paramount! Please read the “House Rules” carefully BEFORE booking to be sure the only surprises of your stay are good ones :)
