We have pantry basics on hand, such as salt, sugar and spices. Cell phone service is spotty in the Hocking Hills, but WiFi is provided at the house. This is the place for a real digital detox. Uber will not be available. Plenty of parking space. Why does the vineyard look like that? It is a newly planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc vineyard. We also have test vines of Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner. It looks a little “wild” because we spray no herbicides inside the vineyard. This cover crop helps ensure soil health and this makes for happy vines and a happy Earth! We rely on biodiversity to strengthen our new baby vines, from being protected by barn owls bats and bluebirds, all the way down to the unseen microorganisms in the soil that boost their grape immune systems! The electric fence is designed to trick our deer friends into being confused and scared away. Newly planted grapes would be like a nice prepackaged salad to white tail deer, so it is imperative we keep our furry friends out of the vineyard. We will add the trellis wire this winter to give the young vines support for when they grow taller than 36” in the spring of 2024. The vines have dropped their first year leaves and are now dormant for the winter. The straw mounds protect the grafts from potential cold damage this winter. Once the buds burst in the spring it will be spread out under the vines as a sustainable method of weed control! If everything goes smoothly, we will have a grape crop in 2025. Compost your green kitchen refuse and help feed the vines!
