In 1818, the Bassegli-Gozze Palace served as accommodation to Francis I, the first Emperor of Austria, during his Dalmatian trips. He arrived on the 24th of May and stayed in the palace for eleven days with his wife Caroline of Bavaria. Even though Pavao Bassegli-Gozze belonged to Ragusan nobility which held strong animosity toward the Austrian rule, it was a festive event for the city and a great honour for the hosts.
