Horses are nocturnal animals of prey and do not have a deep long sleep like we predators. Horses will nap standing or lying down for no more than 4 hrs at a time. Because my horses & ponies weigh from 250 to 1600 lbs, their sheer size can be heard as they walk around their paddock or in & out of their stalls. You may or may not be bothered by their physical sounds. They do not whinny or neigh at night, only with daylight as they call to each other as friends do. You also will hear barn workers arriving around 7 - 8 am. They'll enter the horse equipment room adjacent to the bunkhouse and use the bathroom. Then you'll hear farm sounds: horses, dogs, tractor, atv, people.
