Nature Lover's Oasis, Birder's Paradise! River views all day long. Chalet with Huge, private, Appalachian-fed Swimming POOL, Lagoon. Stargaze in your King bed Loft & birdwatch up at Tree-Top's Peak! Use our kayaks & floaties. Create your immersive nature getaway! Welcome to Stonewall Mills! Your Chalet nestled in serene nature. If you're looking to get-a-way and take in nature's beauty the scenery, views, sounds of nature are one-of-a-kind here! This is a breathtaking location where you will find yourself loving to just "be." Walk the trails, touch the flowers, play in the river, float in the pool on one of our floaties and read a book, chill on the porch, this is your outdoor oasis. ** Please read the Entire Listing. This is a rural location and we have provided good information here so that you can know all the details** Stonewall Mills, a once working grist mill, in the pre-civil war era, gives you the experience to remember with river views from every room! You can even hear the waterfall inside. You're going to love falling asleep to the sounds of water rushing over the old mill's dam. ✔ Zoom meetings in our office or on the front porch with our fiber-optic fast speed internet! Upload: 250MBPS, Download: 375MBPS -OR- In no time this digital detox will restore you completely! This is THE place to lay aside the distractions and devices like cell phones and reconnect with nature and loved ones - no cell service here =) Take a dip in an Appalachian spring-fed river...you might be surprised at how huge the pool area is - rock hop the cascading pools. Since this is a mountain fed river the water is not a hot swimming pool, temperatures vary. In cooler months the hydrotherapy is really amazing for health enthusiasts! Go for an ultra rejuvenating run beside the river on our road! Soak in the sights of perennial gardens, hand-curated stone areas, functional outhouse, short walking trails throughout the property. Bring your yoga mats, trust me! Swing on the front porch and gaze into the river waterfalls! Cooling: the Mill runs off AC units and fans. There are two AC window units downstairs. The floor fans work well to spread the air throughout the 1st floor. There are two AC units upstairs also, one in the Loft and Bunny Hutch. The only thing the Mill doesn't have is perfect climate control. You'll want to expect it to be warmer here and use the blackout curtains during the day to keep out the hot sun during warmer months. Turn on the large fans we provide. The Mill has perfected the creation of a rural outdoor oasis with much to do outside and seriously chill. Dipping in the pool is an amazing cooler. AC that is going to keep it 68 degrees won't be here. The fans creating movement of air helps in a big way for the "feel" of cooler temps. Remember, this is a place to experience a once working grist Mill in the pre-civil war era. You are going back in time and into nature. Good news, bugs/mosquitoes are much less around the river area due to the moisture capsule it creates! That being said there are bugs, spiders, and all aspects of nature here. Expect the opposite of city life. This is a rural nature location. For example, we do clean the windows, but the cobwebs can return the next day. Nature. ✔TreeTops Peak: Above the Millhouse on top of the knoll... Enjoy romantic nights under the stars on the top deck or swing in the day bed underneath. We have lights and a fire ring up at TreeTops. There are some steep areas on the trail. We also have a trail that comes up the back which is less steep. Through the front door you enter the kitchen and fire stove area. You'll notice the amazing woodwork right away and be looking forward to cooking while the waterfall is in clear view! Use anything you need in the kitchen; it's fully stocked with cookware. Stainless steel appliances, dishwasher, amazing stove, and oven. Coffee brewers: we have 1 French press and a regular drip coffee pot. We offer tea and a hot water kettle. Bring your coffee of choice. The dining room is attached to the kitchen. Relax with your friends over dinner and views of the river, pool, falls, waterfowl, and more. Bathrooms: There is a full bathroom on the 1st and 2nd floor. The upstairs bath has a laundry area. ✔ The Happy Room: Queen bed, tall antique dresser, with decor and colors that just make you happy; look for the fun, soft, mint green comforter! Some of the host's favorite pieces from Eastern Europe are all around, as they also spent years of their lives there. The curious, folk-art is represented well, with falls and woodlands just through the windows. There's a cozy little office next to the rooms with a nice desk and view of the falls. ✔ Marina's Room: Marina means "of the sea," named after the host's youngest daughter. There is a lovely full-size bed with a hammered brass looking frame and a chenille comforter. Use the antique school desk with cultural books and cedar shelves for folded items. Look for the hidden nook in the wall where you can put items. A mirror is attached to the nook. The upper creek is viewed well from this room. Watch for waterfowl, lots of birds, owls, and spring peepers. You will be steeped in the natural world! The Bunny Hutch and Loft are up a flight of stairs, the second floor. ✔ The Loft: Head upstairs to find an open, spacious room, with high ceilings and natural light from picture windows which give exceptional views of the falls and surrounding wooded area. There's a King bed with a round window above the head of the bed. Marvel at the stars and moon without lifting your head from the pillow! You'll be sound asleep with the white noise from the falls before you know it. Attached is the lounge/small living room area there is a Smart TV and DVDs. Help yourselves to a movie from the selection. *The upstairs bathroom is connected to the Bunny Hutch. When you're in the Loft you will open the door to the bathroom and there is a small hallway. The Bunny Hutch is on your right and the bathroom is on your left. Remember, lofts don't have standard bedroom doors, they are left open at the top of the stairs. ✔ Bunny Hutch Suite: Yes, it really reminds you of a bunny hutch, total coziness and a full-size bed! With a slanted ceiling, nestle up and sip a hot cup of tea while daydreaming. The hosts once lived in Kenya and have featured several works of art and cultural artifacts that represent Kenyan culture. There's a lovely view of the falls and with the white noise of the falls, you will be relaxed in no time. Watch out...your kids might try to get first dibs on this one! (Directly on the other side of the silk door is your bathroom. Walk through the Loft's door to this area of the second floor). A few other details: If you need to make a phone call use the landline or Face Time... Most cell phones drop calls. Connect to WiFi inside or on the front porch which overlooks the Mill Pond and a 10-foot vertical waterfall along the banks of our creek. You may catch a glimpse of the river otters, beavers, turtles, Blue Heron, Osprey, and other wildlife. If you have a fishing license cast your line for bluegill, bass, and catfish. Explore the perennial gardens, stone cured areas, the original French Buhr Millstones, iron wheat grinder, walking trails - optimal stargazing, and birder's paradise! In the springtime the wildflowers are wild! April to May, fire pink, columine, wild phlox, ferns, bee balm, rhododendron, wild rose, mountain laurel, black-eyed Susan, and more butterflies than you can count. >> Make sure you scroll ALL the way down past the "map," past the "reviews," where it says "House Rules." When you request to stay answer the following PRE-BOOKING questions: 1. What brings you to the area? 2. Are the number of guests on your reservation correct? We do not accept children 2 and under at this property. 3. Did you read the entire listing and agree to the house rules? 4. This is a serious eco-friendly home. Do you agree to recycling and light-footprint living? 5. You agree there will be no party-like behavior and irresponsible drinking? 6. Our dogs Honey & Coffee will greet you with a bark and then you'll be friends. Our two cats stay around, always outside the house. Let us know if you want someone to be there when you arrive. The Mill House, River area, the treetop and trail, trails to Sitting Rock meadow, Rock Garden. Check out the photo of the property layout. Pool Access: Since this is a natural waterway, legally, the government owns it. While our property extends into the river pool and river if a person wanted to access it from the other side of the river (not our land) legally they can. Our side is completely private and rarely have we ever seen someone over on the other side, but just so you are aware of that law regarding natural waterways in Virginia. Firewood: Free for the indoor wood stove, winter use only. Outdoor Fire Pit Use: In lieu of being ecologically responsible we do not allow guests to bring their own firewood. There are two options: 1. We can provide a bundle (a standard bundle is several pieces of strong wood that has a long burn life) for $10 each. Bring some cash and leave it on the kitchen counter =) 2. Feel free to collect your own "down" wood on our property. It is a requirement that each guest reads the ENTIRE listing before booking. This is a rural location and it's in your best interest. We have a detailed listing for you. =) I'm Melody and I run the listing. Jim and Liz are your hosts and they're in the farmhouse up on the hill (600 yrds away). We keep all communication in the Airbnb app. Regular Hours of Operation: 7am-10pm. For all inquiries and questions message us in the app and we'll get back to you during the hours of operation. Please call 911 if you have an emergency and are unable to reach us. There is a nice road for walking. The cow pasture is our neighbor =) You'll want to bring your own transportation. Our road is a county road maintained by Appomattox. It's a gravel road, one mile, next to a river which takes you to our rural location. Drive slowly, no guard rail. Part of the TreeTop trail is pretty steep and rocky. - We have a French press, and drip coffee pot. Bring your own coffee. - Amazing Appalachian Spring-fed well water! We also have a Brita filter in the fridge, but you don't need it. - The River Pool is also spring fed! Of course the water rushing causes the river bed to mix and make the water look dark or even clay, but we have great Appalachian water inside and out! -Winter guests agree to feeling very comfortable working a wood stove. This is the primary heat source. There are space heaters in the rooms during the winter. You can move them to another part of the house if needed. Turn them off if you leave. Remember, this is not perfect climate-controlled for an 80 degree home in the winter. The wood stove is large and works great. This is a colonial-era recreated Millhouse as an experience of nature and historic preservation. Sit next to the woodstove, read a book, watch the falls, and nature...close the door to your room and let the space heater get it cozy. - 2 very nice dogs and 2 cats are on the property. They love new friends and stay outside. We do not allow other pets on-site, no exceptions. One orange cat, Rain, likes to stay around the Millhouse- she's getting famous in our reviews! -Conservation is important to us: Cooling in the Mill runs off 4 AC window units and fans. There are two AC window units downstairs and 2 upstairs. We believe in energy conservation at the Mill House. -We do not allow parties and events. -When you request to stay, answer the following PRE-BOOKING questions: >> Make sure you scroll ALL the way down past the "map," past the "reviews," where it says "House Rules."
