Description
Stabl Y Felin is a Grade 2 listed converted stable attached to a heritage corn mill, that has been lovingly restored using traditional skills and sustainable materials and furnishings. With it's 4.5m ceilings, the stabl comes with an airy bedroom with kingsize sleigh bed, en-suite with walk-in shower, sitting room with reclaimed kitchenette and breakfast bar, and a hayloft with a kingsize futon hidden on top for the brave. A peaceful, rustic, village getaway in the hills, 4 miles from the coast. The space Stabl Y Felin has been renovated using heritage skills and sustainable materials. It boasts metre thick, wonky, lime-rendered walls, exposed stonework from local quarries, deep windowcils with single-glazed sash windows and shutters, and functions as a partially off grid home (for more info on heating, please read to the end). The space the guests experience is best suited for two people although can sleep 4, if you know each other well! It comprises of one main bedroom and en-suite, and one open plan sitting room with kitchenette complete with 2-ring hob, small fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle. The living room has a high mezzanine (crogloft) accessable by ladder with kingsize bed on top (aka bedroom 2). This space is not suitable for small children, people with limited mobility, or inebriated people - it is high up and should be accessed at your own risk! Probably best for a teenager or close friends who are happy to use the en-suite bathroom facilities inside the main bedroom - please note that there are no private bathroom facilities for those staying on the mezzanine. The stabl is filled with natural finishes, slate floors, sandstone tiles, eco-paints, salvaged driftwood table legs, reclaimed wood counter tops, restored antique and vintage furniture, our own coppiced and hand worked wood and repurposed, up-cycled gems. Everything inside has been made by our own hands, collected on travels, sustainably sourced or from independent and local businesses. With it being over 250 years old and with 4.5m ceilings, the feeling is plush but rustic, it has been renovated traditionally and sympathetically. Some dust and spiders are inevitable in buildings such as these! The stabl has underfloor heating that is operated in the main house and is powered using a solid fuel biomass system that is manually operated by us, using wood sustainably coppiced on our own land. We do not run the underfloor heating in the summer unless requested, but please be aware that it takes us about 4 hours to generate enough hot water to run the system, so it is not an instant resource and will require notice to run. The off-grid nature of this property and it's mindful use of resources is one of the reasons we love it, it brings you back to a slow pace of living. The space rarely becomes 'hot', and the stonework is cool, so we advise you to bring slippers. The main bedroom has an electric blanket, plus there are extra quilts and hot water bottles. The kitchen and bathroom taps are also connected to the biomass and hot water can sometimes take a long time to travel to the Stabl. The shower is electric and operated by a pull-cord inside the bathroom. There is a plug-in oil radiator but we ask for this to be used respectfully due to the current energy crisis. Guest access The stabl is attached to the main Felin (mill house), down a short drive in a central village location. The Felin itself is situated on an acre of private land that is still undergoing gradual renovations having laid derelict for almost a century, so it is wild and unstable, with a deep leat, collapsed outbuildings, steep access and tiered levels. We ask guest to not walk through this, it is not safe or landscaped and the outbuildings are off limits, plus we have on going stonemasonry work happening in this area. However, there is access less than one minute's walk away to our 2 acre organic meadow as well as close, private dog-walking spots and public rights of way just a short walk from the house. The meadow makes a good space for relaxing and stargazing, directions to it will be left inside the Stabl. We ask for dogs to be kept on leads in the meadow at all times as our cats enjoy wandering in it, and it also does not have secure fencing. The Stabl is situated in between an operational old welsh Capel (chapel), the Felin, and the Mydyr stream, the capel lands are connected to the Felin's. The Capel is open to the public and guests are permitted to respectfully visit the old cemetery that lies behind the house and the stabl, but be mindful that the capel is still actively used and there may be evening choir practice or visitors from time to time. No dogs are permitted in the cemetary. Other things to note If guests are interested in having homemade meals cooked for them and dropped round in the evenings, Lulu trained to be a caterer at an organic farm in Somerset and can cater to vegan, veggie, and meat eaters very happily. This is dependent on her availability, and is easier to plan with notice, so get in touch with your dietary preferences and she will give you some options. For those interested in heritage skills, nature or arts and crafts, be sure to also ask Lulu about what courses and events may be on offer at the nature reserve she helps to manage (Denmark Farm).
