The Funky Hippy Chic Boutique is at the front of the property and to our delight, there is music and events throughout the summer. Now for a bit of History: Welcome to our cabin that we lovingly call Chanin Acres because the property and the 1790's farmhouse was purchased in the late 1920's by Patti's grandparents, Sam and Esther Chanin, for $70! As the story goes, due to a corrupt holding company, Grandpa lost it and had to buy it back for $350. Being of meager means, it took every penny they could save to acquire this little piece of heaven for the family to enjoy as their summer retreat. Sam was a NYC cabby, so he was able to take summers off and bring the family to the Mountains to escape the heat, enjoy the fresh county air, and make family memories. To make a living during these months, they did what many people did in those days, they rented rooms and went on to build three additional bungalows. Sam Chanin Bungalows was born and places like this mushroomed into larger boarding houses, small Inns, and eventually hotels and resorts giving birth to the Catskill Mountain Resort area, famously known as 'The Borsht Belt'. Being from Brooklyn, where a newstand/candy store was on every corner, Sam felt that he must do the same! So, he built it on the corner of the property and sold newspapers, candy and hooch in Coca Cola bottles to the many neighboring bungalow colony's handymen! Grandpa was a true entrepreneur! Sadly, eventually the farmhouse and bungalows were too far gone and needed to come down...but Jonathan and Patti salvaged all they could using the hand-hewned wood beams and wide plank flooring throughout The Funky Hippy Chic Boutique and in our home up the hill. (FYI, we lovingly called this 'down the hill' and the house 'up the hill.') So, in paying homage to Grandpa, Grandma and Mama Joan (Patti's Mom) we are stepping back to a simpler time, where an adventurous day was finding a salamander by the pond, capturing fire flies in a jar, sitting on the step of the farmhouse eating one of Grandma's famous banana sandwiches on a hard roll, and joining Grandpa in the field with a bushel of tomatoes and a couple of salt shakers, singing songs and retiring to the shade of a pine tree to read a good book. We hope you will make some beautiful memories of your own here and make the cabin at Chanin Acres, your home away from home Guest access The entire cabin and property around the pond areas. Please do not go past the signs at the far side of the ponds as that is kept private for Patti and Jonathan. Other things to note NO INSIDE PLUMBING. Fabulous hot and cold outside shower, sink and Incinolet toilet. (Must familiarize yourself with the procedure that must be followed without fail.) If you want to bring your pet, that is wonderful as long as your pet is friendly with both people and other dogs as we have our Iree on the premises. She is chill and friendly. Due to the size of the cabin, we ask that your pet not exceed 45 lbs without clearance from Patti and Jonathan. We love pets but here are the rules: 1. permitted with prior approval. 2. Pick up your pets poop and toss in the woods. 3. If pets are left alone in the cabin, they must be crated. 4. Please provide your pet with their own blanket or bed, pets are not permitted on the couch/sleeper without a separate covering please. ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING INSIDE CABIN and please leave dirty shoes outside to keep our little cabin neat and clean for everyone.
