Description
2006 AIA NSW Chapter Commendation - Designed by Nicholas Murcutt Architect The Box House: Simplicity Cubed' - Elaine Louie, New York Times 'A model space for a simpler life' - Jonathon Bell, 21st Century House BOXHOUSE is a bespoke timber, off-grid coastal shack crafted to provide a simple escape: perfect for a couple or to relax alone. Stay put to unwind and unplug or venture out to explore the far south coast's pristine beaches, coastal lakes and spectacular Mimosa Rocks National Park. The space The space This environmentally conscious property accommodates 2 guests. Its bold form is both spacious and intimate, simple and character full. The open plan space is drenched in light. Downstairs there is a range of seating to suit your mood. Climb the stepped ladder to the mezzanine and a generous king sized bed. (Let us know if you wish for the bed to be re-configured as twin singles). It’s a place both inside and out, to feel engaged in the landscape, the sky and weather conditions. The Kitchen There’s a good range of handmade ceramics, pots’n’pans, kitchen tools and pantry basics and because we love our tea and coffee rituals, a range of tea pots and coffee makers (moka, aeropress and plunger) are provided. The fridge is small but adequate to store more than a few days supplies. Outside are a gas fuelled Webber BBQ and for the more adventurous cook, a fire pit (subject to fire conditions) and wood-fired pizza oven. The Shower and Toilet A small shower room is in the house and a composting toilet system is in the shed outside, about a 20 metre stroll away. The Other Things to Note Being of sustainable design the BOXHOUSE does not have hotel-like comforts such as air conditioning and carpet. Whilst the BOXHOUSE was designed for a minimal footprint we are in the process of a major upgrade, still off grid but with more capacity in the system. In the meantime, our current set-up might mean you have to think differently about your everyday rituals, staying here is an experience in eco living. Solar Power The BOXHOUSE is completely off grid with just three solar panels currently powering lights, the fridge and power points. Whilst adequate for this purpose it has its limits. The use of a hair drier, or a toaster for example will cause the system to overload. Small portable backup light sources are provided. Water We are self-sufficient for water, harvesting it from the house and shed roofs. We ask you to be mindful of this finite resource especially when showering. Heating An un-flued gas heater takes the chill off the air in winter, however you might want to bring extra woollens, especially if travelling from warmer climates. Location We are located in a small coastal farming area. Being in the middle of nature means there will be insects and possibly small animals such as micro bats and larger ones that have to be contended with, a group kangaroos cross our land daily. There are no screens across the openings of our building. We do provide necessary sprays to keep the bugs at bay. There will also be the sounds of cattle, tractors, of farm life generally that you may hear from time to time. Photos to be credited however no commercial photography is allowed without our consent. Commercial charges apply for use of the BOXHOUSE for location shoots. Please advise the intent and details of a commercial shoot in your booking enquiry. Registration Details PID-STRA-51213
