Our home sits on a magical parcel of New Mexican high desert, offering both easy access to the comforts of Santa Fe and the profound solitude of an indescribable landscape. Nestled on a hill above Galisteo—a village long favored by writers and artists and cowboys, and the Tewa people who long preceded them—our three-bedroom home is a perfect retreat. There are striking boulders to clamber, miles of great walking/biking trails, and only the horn of a passing train to remind you of the outside world. We are relatively recent occupants of the property, which was once part of the vast McKee ranch, and are still making it our own. You'll see the signs of progress and future plans — like the young trees and stakes marking our new drip irrigation system — but the space is ready for guests to enjoy, too. After arriving up our long driveway and entering the fenced area around the home (safe for enclosing dogs), you'll find an oasis of trees and shrubs (and in the right season, flowers), and the wide south-facing windows of our sun porch winking back at you. The main common area of the home has a vast west-facing picture window for taking the sunset, but in warmer months you'll likely spend a lot of time in the screened porch behind the house, with a full dining room table, or head out to the open-air deck outside the fence to watch the sunset without encumbrance. From the king-size bed in the master bedroom you have a view straight out the sun porch to the Ortiz mountains. A second bedroom has a stylish couch bed with a luxurious mattress pad, plus a desk and monitor for remote working and an overhead projector for streaming shows and movies. (Fast and reliable satellite internet is available throughout the house). A third bedroom has a wooden sleigh bed and its own view past the garden to the mountains beyond. The land around the house is its most precious amenity. Climb the sandstone rocks beside the home and you'll find cattails growing from crevices that harbor rainwater. Explore the trails we've traced around the property, keeping an eye out for great horned owls and an ear cocked for the distant call of coyotes. Or bike the serene and winding roads in almost any direction. Our home is on the western edge of the village of Galisteo (*not* in Lamy, as the US Postal Service would have you believe). We moved here because of the desert that surrounds us: the emerald green cottonwoods along the intermittent wash to our west, the hikable volcanic ridge to our east that offers 360-degree views, the shrouded Sangre de Cristo mountains to our north beyond Santa Fe, the Ortiz Mountains to our south. If you enjoy sitting on a deck and watching the sun slowly set in all its glory, this place is for you. Our home is 30 minutes on excellent roads from Santa Fe, and even closer to the amenities of Eldorado (a great grocery store + restaurants). The curious artistic communities of Cerrillos and Madrid, on New Mexico's "Turquoise Trail", are just down the road, too. Our property is about a quarter mile up a dirt road. Friendly neighbors are within earshot but live far enough away you'll feel entirely alone.
