Description
Unique Cabin/Lean-to designed by the owners, as seen on C4's Sandi Togsvig's Extraordinary escapes Season 3. The Lean-to is wrapped in beautiful Welsh Scenery with wild swimming spots close by and lots of forests and trails to explore. Very close to Hergest Ridge (Offas Dyke Path) and an award winning pub (Country Pub of the year 2020) just 15 minutes walk up the road! Hergest Lee is the perfect place to relax and re connect with nature. The space The Lean-To is built on to the North end of a threshing barn conversion (our home) in Burlingjobb, Powys, Wales. Surrounded by soft green hills and poetic ridges straddling the Anglo-Welsh border. The black exterior cedar cladding was designed to be in keeping with the original cladding of the old barn but updated in a modern way. The whole build was designed and made by the owner, architectural designer Paul Gent Paul also designed and made all the fitted elements inside the lean to, including, Kitchen, Windows/doors and bed, storage and staircase, to create a continuity of style and tone. To the right of the kitchen there are two bunk areas suitable for children, these have two full size single mattresses and opening windows. These are accessed by a ladder so not suitable for smaller children unless there is an adult sleeping up there with them. In the unit in the kitchen area you will find board games and we have lots of books for you to enjoy. We chose not to have a TV as to encourage our guests to re- connect with nature and 'switch off' and explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. There is a wet room/shower towards the back of the Lean-to with toilet. There is also a small semi-enclosed gravel garden for you to sit and enjoy your morning coffee with the bi fold doors open, complete with fire pit/grill. Enter the bi fold doors in to the open plan living space with double hight ceiling, a feeling of space has been created in a relatively small footprint by the use of high ceilings. The use of vertical lines in the floating staircase extend the space and draw the eye upward. The building was made using a timber frame, cedar cladding on the exterior which has been charred using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. The black timber was continued inside on the interior beams and windows. to your right you will see the kitchen area, this has everything you need to make delicious meals. 2 induction hob, full size Smeg oven, toaster, manual espresso machine and a small fridge (sorry no freezer). To the right of the floating double staircase you will find the sunken bath, the perfect place to relax after a long day exploring and on the other side you will find the master bedroom, this has a comfy king size bed with natural linen bedclothes, box storage shelves and beautiful Ib Kofad Larsson head board. The colour palette inside shows deep rich colours such as brown and black, very dark colours contrasted with the soft pink micro cement floor and birch ply walls. The furniture has a mid century theme with pieces from Ib Kofad Larssen, Arne Jacobsen and Guy Rogers. We like the timeless element of this classic style of furniture, but also the sleek, modern aesthetic juxtaposed with interesting antiques and oddities. There is a charred black statement staircase which is the focal piece of the room. Fully equipped Kitchen Toilet 4G and Fibre Broadband Master Bedroom Mezzanine Area Small private garden Small Fridge Toaster Board Games Sunken Bath Library of books Bang & Olufsen Speakers Soft Linens & Blankets Fire pit/grill Black out Blinds Shower Toiletries Provided Comfy chairs / sofa Manual Espresso Machine Please note, the lean to is designed to sleep two adults and up to two children. On occasion we do sleep more than two adults but please be aware this is a fairly small property and can feel a bit snug for 4 adults. The bunk area's are great for kids but can feel small for adults. The are accessed by a fairly steep ladder. Please note this is our family home — a personal, heart-filled space we love sharing with kind, like-minded guests. If you appreciate nature, thoughtful design, and good energy, you’ll feel right at home. Expect peaceful trails on your doorstep, an award-winning pub nearby, and a warm welcome from our family. We have do have small children and sometimes you may hear them. We also have a very friendly cat who likes to say hello and a very friendly Italian greyhound/whippet. We use a professional cleaning company to keep the space spotless. That said, the dark wood can sometimes give the impression of dust — it’s all part of the character. This isn’t a polished, impersonal space; it’s a soulful place that celebrates nature, design, and the beauty of the landscape. If that resonates, you’ll love it here. If you are travelling as a x2 and you need an extra bed making up we charge an extra £15 for the laundry - as This is a direct cost to us. Guest access The lean to is completely separate it’s your own space. It is joined on to our home but is your own space completely. Other things to note We have young children, you may hear them sometimes. We also have a very friendly cat and a whippet who may come and say hello! We also have neighbours so we ask that noise is kept to a minimum after 11pm. although on occasion we accept four adults. We are not a party place. The bunk areas are small and children love these but may be a bit too snug for adults. There's also a steep ladder up to the bunks so not suitable for very small children. Although we are remote we do have neighbours either side. Due to the large skylights, dark tones and matt plywood surfaces, dust can show more readily, we care very much about cleanliness of our property, we do recognise that some of the antiques that we furnish the place with have a certain patina that doesn't lend itself to that 'sparkling fresh out of the box' look such as the foxing on the mirrors and the chipped paint on the frames.
