Description

Quirky 100 year old 2br adobe home lovingly restored to create an old New Mexican vibe in the El Salto area of Taos County. Close to numerous trails for hiking, biking, snowshoeing and waterfalls. Perfect locale for writers - cozy quiet home. Fifteen minutes from the base of famed Taos Ski Valley and Carson National Forest and FIFTEEN MINUTE DRIVE to Taos. Home Occupation Permit # HO-32-2020 The space A restored one-story, 2br 100 year old adobe home located in the foothills with views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The master bedroom has a queen bed with a stunning view of El Salto Mountain. A separate bedroom with a full size bed with great afternoon sun and one bath with a master stone work shower. There is a pull-out couch. Shampoo, conditioner, lotion and terry cloth robes available. Comfortable mattresses and bedding. The casita has several sitting and reading areas and a desk for a computer. The house and neighborhood are quiet - perfect for a writer's retreat! PLEASE NOTE - there is WiFi but no TV please bring a laptop to access any media. The casita has steps down into and up into several rooms along with a rock shower that you must step over and into - this is not an ideal stay if you have mobility issues. The adobe helps to keep the home cool in summer and warm in winter although there are wall heaters, crackling fireplace and working wood stove. Parking, private yard and history! There are lots of trees, birds and other various wildlife to be seen or heard all around. We do supply a limited amount of wood - there are locations in the guest binder of where to buy additional. We ask that no candles or incense be burned for safety reasons. No Smoking in house - if you do smoke outside, please dispose of your cigarette butts in the trash, please do not throw them in the flower beds or on the patio. We do not supply ashtrays - please bring one with you if you need to smoke outside. No tobacco products anywhere in the house, this includes 'chew'. Although tobacco users may not notice smell, non-tobacco users do. UPDATED APRIL 2026 - currently we are experiencing a windy drought laden spring. Weather dependent, the fireplace and wood stove may not be available. We have neighbors with hay bales and if a spark and ignite, our neighborhood would be lost. Thank you for understanding - please reach out if this is something that is visit dependent. Resident kitty, Jacamo, will visit. A guest, in a review, said that although he is allergic to cats, he wasn't to Jac. He may be hypo-allergenic but just in case, if you are highly allergic, please note that he likes to visit! If you are a person that likes sanitized hotels and motels and has a hard time appreciating the character, history, adobe and an understanding of NM zoning laws, then this is not the listing for you. PLEASE read the first line of the listing. ADOBE (that means made out of mud) house. An adobe house is a living breathing entity - this house was built over 100 years ago and back then the builders used dirt as an insulation. Because of that and the vigas, there may be a cellar spider (harmless and helpful roommate) or two. This is not your run of the mill, thrown together to rent out, saltillo tile floor spec house. This space has character, history - read the reviews! Guest access Guests have use of the entire casita. The den has a pull-out couch along with a work table. Nestle on the love seat in front of the cozy river stone fireplace with a loveseat and coffee table. STEP DOWN into the kitchen which has a four burner stove with griddle, oven, beautiful stonework, work table, wood-burning stove and table for four. There is a drip coffee maker (with timer) along with coffee, tea, cream, honey, sugar, cinnamon, cocoa for sprinkling in coffee and a toaster and crockpot/slow cooker. Sparkling water in the refrigerator. Breakfast not included- although there are superb breakfast offerings in our village. The bathroom has a rock shower created to resemble the Manby/Stage Coach Hot Springs . An outside table and patio chairs for enjoying meals, coffee, our breathtaking sunrises and sunsets as well as gazing at the Sangre de Cristo mountains. There is also back patio seating for enjoying stunning mountain views with a fire pit for warmth and s'mores. IMPORTANT - DOUSE YOUR OUTSIDE FIRE WITH WATER! WE HAVE WINDS AND HAY BALES ALL AROUND. There are hikes in the El Salto area a walk or short drive behind our house. Other things to note There no TV at this home. Please note. The house has lots of steps in and out of rooms - this is not the best casita for someone with mobility issues. If you are unsure about your ability to navigate uneven surfaces or stepping up into the shower, please reach out. If you have more people than your original reservation is booked for, please notify host prior or upon check-in. The cleaning fee does not include washing and drying of all used dishes and cookware. We have a NO pet policy. The area does not have a fenced in area and there are livestock in the area. The neighborhood is an established one please be mindful of our neighbors. Also, if you haven't experienced high altitude before, please prepare yourself by drinking lots of water on your flight and/or your drive to Taos. Lovely people, if you forget anything at the house, please let me know and I will give you our address and you may send me a package, addressed and stamped and it will be mailed to you. Lastly, we are honored if you are staying in a long term situation. If you are staying over a week's time period and would like the house cleaned for you, there is an additional cleaning charge for each cleaning appointment. This will need to be worked out with host prior.
