The town owes its name to the walled castle which in the early Middle Ages stood atop the "Mons Fortis" hill, a village ancient origins reaching back to Roman times. Today, Monforte is one of the 11 municipalities that produce Nebbiolo-based Barolo wines, considered by many wine experts as the premium wine in all of Italy. While fewer than 2000 people reside in Monforte today, it is a truly vibrant village situated some 480 meters (1575 feet) above sea level that overlooks sprawling vineyards blanketing the surrounding hills in all directions. Unlike many of the other 10 Barolo municipalities that largely consist of single main streets, Monforte is a maze of small streets emanating like rays from its central Piazza Umberto I with each street then splitting again to produce a memorable maze of narrow cobbled streets that climb up the hill to provide stunning views of the surrounding vineyards before reaching the Bell Tower, viewable from all parts of the village, that began as a watchtower around the year 1000 and then was transformed into the bell tower in the former parish church that was destroyed in the 1900s. At the foot of the tower is the Horszowski Auditorium, a natural amphitheater with superb acoustics that has showcased the annual Monforte Jazz Festival each summer since 1986.
