Located near Grosse Pointe and only 2 blocks from the water, our house has a private backyard, nearby river access & great riverfront parks just minutes away. Our neighborhood is part of the famous "Copper Canyon" and is known as one of Detroit's safest neighborhoods where many families and police officers live. OUR HOUSE & OUR HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD Built in 1923, this rustic home and this neighborhood "Jefferson Chalmers" (formerly Fairview) have a fascinating history. Back then, this was part of the early wave of houses to be built in this riverfront neighborhood, located along Detroit's "Lower East Side" and south-west of Grosse Pointe Farms. WHY IS THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IMPORTANT? This area is also famous in automotive history. It was literally the birthplace of the automotive industry and marked the changeover from an agrarian horse-driven society to the modern industrial-based urban world. In the late 1800s and early 1900s this neighborhood was home to 3 of the region's most famous horse racing tracks. In 1901, the Detroit Driving Club held the first automobile race which featured the young Henry Ford who was the only man willing to race against the formidable Alexander Winton (a leading auto manufacturer). After a spectacular upset, Henry Ford won the race and with this demonstration, seeded the founding of the modern Ford Motor Company. Between the years 1911 and 1919, Chalmers motorcars operated the world's first automotive test track here. Chalmers Street (named after the company) and East Jefferson Avenue intersect, and as such, the neighborhood became known as "Jefferson Chalmers". Our home is located just 2 blocks from the actual route that Henry Ford took during his famous race in 1901 (historic maps available). We are also just a few blocks from the famous canals that once served as "bootlegger's alley" during prohibition where rum and other illegal substances were quietly smuggled in from Canadian suppliers right across the river. The house is within 2-3 blocks of several large beautiful parks such as Alfred Brush Ford Park and Riverfront-Lakewood Park. Nearby you will find world-class fishing (musky), boat launch facilities, and many nice neighbors. We are conveniently located 5.5 miles to downtown (10-15 minutes by car or 20-30 minutes by bike). FREE street parking is available all around the house. Although bus service is available, we recommend driving a car during your stay in Detroit.
