The Charred House – Urban Retreat by the Water

The Charred House is a true urban retreat by the water — central Stockholm living meets the calm of nature. Set among the treetops on Stora Essingen, with sea views from every room. Designed and built by Mattias Stenberg, an award-winning architect and furniture designer (German Design Award, Good Design Award, Designer of the Year), as the flagship for his own practice. Featured in Condé Nast Traveller as a “barefoot hideaway in the treetops of Stockholm,” and profiled in Residence magazine. The space The Charred House spans 66 sqm over two levels. The lower level holds the entrance, a bathroom with shower and full washer/dryer, the first of two bedrooms (one 180 cm bed), and a generous kitchen and dining area with sea views and direct access to the outdoor space. Upstairs is a dedicated lounge with soft seating and a Samsung Serif TV, connected to Apple TV with several streaming options available. Next to it is the second bedroom, with two connected 80 cm beds that convert to a twin or two singles. Every room is built around the view and a “barefoot” sense of calm: bleached fir ceilings, terrazzo and waxed fir flooring, textured granite in the bathroom, integrated lighting, and a custom kitchen with a stainless bench and Smeg appliances, plus a dedicated coffee station. All lighting can be controlled manually or via the Plejd app (activation code in the welcome info) — an iPad with the app is also provided throughout your stay. Despite the peaceful setting, the city is never far away. Bus 1 stops right on the island and takes you directly into central Stockholm in about 20 minutes, with easy connections to the nearest metro station along the way. There’s also a tram stop on Stora Essingen for quick access to the southern parts of the city. Stockholm’s public transport is safe, clean, and runs around the clock, so getting home late is never a worry. Beyond the house, Stora Essingen itself is quiet and walkable (a loop around the island is about 3.5 km), with public docks for a swim and kayak rental nearby. Just a short walk away, a local bakery serves warm cinnamon buns and sourdough — perfect for breakfast. Essinge square also has a convenience store, cafés, and a few local restaurants, all within easy reach. Guest access Guests will have access to the full house and outdoor area. Other things to note The Charred House is reached by a stone stairway from the main road, so unfortunately we are not able to welcome guests with mobility issues/disabilities. Parking is available on the street called Stenkullavägen at the top of the stairs. Parking is paid using one of the following apps: ePark, EasyPark or Parkster (enter Zone 4). Please observe that the street is closed for cleaning each Tuesday between 9:00 and 14:00.
