Description

Relax on your own, or with your family, at this peaceful, stylish house set in a two acre garden on the banks of the Omarama Stream. Enjoy the stars from the secluded hot tub above the river. Explore the river bank with its ducks, chickens and gold medal trout fishing or hang out in the sun on the sheltered outdoor patio. A newly listed property (August 2023), the house was once Gavin and Mandy's family home. Now your hosts, we live nearby. The space Lucy’s Cottage is a spacious self-contained, double-glazed house with four bedrooms and a large kitchen-dining-living area. It has a separate library/office and a small meditation room. Its designed to be comfortable for two to four guests but easily takes a family of six plus an infant. Two double bedrooms have Queen sized beds and two upstairs rooms have a single bed each . One of the single rooms has an additional kids sleeping cave. All linen and extras are supplied. On the mezzanine floor between the single rooms is a play area for kids with a work desk and games, dressups and leggo . Additional children's beds and an infant's cot can be arranged on request. The large bathroom is heated and contains a bath with a view, a walk-in shower, the toilet, vanity and an enclosed laundry. The laundry has a tub, large washer and clothes dryer. There is also an outside washing line and an inside drying rack. The kitchen is very well equipped with an electric stove two ovens, a dishwasher, coffee making (plunger), fridge/freezer and all the utensils you’ll ever need. Outside there is a secluded, sunny patio with shade, a BBQ and an outdoor table. Linked to the kitchen via a sliding window its great for dinning “al fresco”. At the rear there is a large entrance porch for storing wood, wet weather gear, boots and bikes. For heating there is a wood stove, a heat exchanger and underfloor heating. In summer, if needed, the heat exchanger becomes an air conditioner. The living room has a 40 inch TV with Freeview and Netflix. There is a piano but sadly its somewhat out of tune! Lucy’s Cottage was designed as our former home by Tim Heath, an award winning Dunedin architect. With stunning mountain views the house is located in a rambling native garden 50 m from the beautiful Omarama Stream with domestic ducks, chickens and trout fishing. We are retired and live nearby in another house on the property. Gavin, an airplane pilot for 50 years, was a Geologist, the Chief Mountain Guide at Mount Cook, an international River and Heli-ski guide and for 25 years was a professional Glider Pilot at Omarama. Co-host Mandy is the green fingered gardener who specialises in growing native plants and vegetables and was recently featured in NZ Gardener Magazine. Our interests include flying our Piper Cub, gardening especially with native plants, boating on Lake Benmore, gliding, e-biking, off-shore and inshore sailing, grand children and looking after you, our Lucy’s Cottage guests. We grow chickens and ducks for their eggs and have an orchard and a large raspberry patch for in season treats. There is a secluded hot tub looking over the Omarama Stream for soaking under the stars of the Mackenzie Night Skies. Please check with your Host for access to the hot tub. Containing many pictures and art, the décor reflects the host’s long association with the area, the mountains, flying and gliding. Guest access The house is wheel chair accessible from the car parks, as are the two lower bedrooms, kitchen living area and the bathroom. Please inquire further about accessibility and your needs. Other things to note The favorite things our Lucy's Cottage guests like to do are: - walk The Hooker Valley Walk, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. - view the Southern night sky from our Hot tub. - visit the Clay Cliffs. - Hike, walk or cycle - go Trout Fishing or Gliding. - Relax - its the perfect place for a quiet day off from a busy holiday schedule! Omarama is truly in the middle of everywhere! Its a quiet rural town (a best kept secret?) that is central to all the southern tourist attractions including Mt Cook, the great lakes of Tekapo, Pukaki, Ohau and Benmore, the seaside town of Oamaru and the rest. Check below in the "Where you’ll be" section for details.
