And we’re not the only ones who think it’s special – Birch Studio was recently featured in The Sunday Times’ Top 40 Places to Stay in Cornwall. Sitting right beside the stream, this beautifully restored former artist’s studio is surrounded by nature. Brown trout can be spotted in the water below, kingfishers regularly dart past and soaring trees create a wonderfully private setting for a few peaceful days in Cornwall. Once the home of renowned artist Samuel John Lamorna Birch RA RWS (1869–1955), the studio still holds little reminders of its fascinating past – you can even spot traces of his original oil paint around the old oak doorway. Inside, Birch Studio is small but beautifully formed. Natural light, warm earthy tones and characterful details create a cosy, calming space designed for switching off completely. And outside is where this little retreat becomes particularly special. A brand-new private hot tub has been installed this month, perfect for sinking into after a day exploring the Cornish coast. Please note, the new hot tub is so recent that it has not yet been photographed, so the current images do not show it. There’s also a private sauna beside the stream – spend an hour or two soaking and unwinding, perhaps with a glass of wine in hand, while watching the wildlife and listening to the water trickling past. Then head inside, curl up on the sofa and settle in for a cosy evening as darkness falls over the valley. Despite feeling wonderfully secluded, you’re far from cut off. Lamorna Cove and the local pub, The Wink, are just a couple of minutes’ walk away, while the beautiful fishing villages of Mousehole and Newlyn are only around five minutes away by car. Birch Studio sleeps up to four guests, with a king-size bedroom and a small sofa bed in the living area. There’s also a lovely mezzanine level – the perfect little spot to escape with a book. A little note before booking: Birch Studio really is petite and cosy. The lounge, kitchen and dining space are all within one room, while the shower and washing facilities are located within the bedroom. It’s all part of the character of this very special former artist’s hideaway.
