Description

A dream lake house built about 20 years ago for family vacations ( gatherings) and built it large to accommodate many guests. Sparkling clean. High vaulted ceilings, stone fireplace, unique furnishings and two stories of windows give an exceptional view of Big Lake and all it's beauty. The Great Room is used for dining, games, relaxing by the fire, watching the lake and all the wildlife that comes and goes. The house is rented by the week in peak season Sat-Sat (Mem Day-Labor Day) The space Welcome to Birch Brae, the hidden gem nestled on the serene Big Lake, where the fish are plenty, and the party crowds are scarce. Built in the year 2000, this secluded haven boasts an array of bays and untouched forestland, offering a tranquil escape for those who prefer the gentle lapping of clear lake waters over the raucous revelry of more populous destinations. As you approach Birch Brae, the public boat landing beckons just a quarter-mile away, inviting anglers to try their luck with Musky, Panfish, and a variety of Bass, not to mention the elusive Northern Pike and Walleye. The lake's crystalline waters are a playground for aquatic enthusiasts, with Birch Brae perched proudly on the southern bluff, gazing out towards Keith Island. A descent of 30 stairs leads to a 60-foot dock, where sandy shallows await eager swimmers and water sports aficionados. With two canoes, two kayaks, a dingy, and a swimming pad at your disposal, adventure is just a paddle away. For those who prefer their water fun with a side of land-based leisure, the yard's fire pit offers a stone-patio sanctuary for sunset admiration and stargazing. While firewood isn't provided, guests are welcome to forage for their own or bring some along, ensuring that the flames of relaxation burn bright throughout their stay. The heart of Birch Brae is undoubtedly its expansive kitchen, equipped with every culinary tool imaginable. An extra beverage fridge in the garage and a secondary refrigerator in the rec room's new kitchenette ensure that refreshments are always within reach. And for the grill masters among us, two grills stand ready—one fueled by propane (provided) and the other awaiting the smoky kiss of charcoal (BYO or use what's left by previous guests). Comfort extends beyond the kitchen, with all bath towels and linens provided. However, beach towels are a personal affair, so guests are kindly reminded to bring their own. But Birch Brae isn't just about the water; it's also a gateway to the Vilas County Bike Trail System. With over 45 miles of paved paths winding through the pristine northern wilderness, cyclists can explore the scenic routes connecting St. Germain, Sayner, Boulder Junction, and Manitowish Waters. And with five bikes available for guest use, the trails are yours to conquer. Vilas County is also one of the world’s premier snowmobiling destinations. In the Lake Superior Snowbelt, normally buried by several feet of snow and the trails are in top condition thanks to the local snowmobile clubs!!! We have over 600 miles of spectacular trails that traverse unspoiled wilderness, crossing undeveloped lakes and connecting to scenic Northwoods communities. Birch Brae about a quarter mile from a trail. The house has a long private driveway and places to park trailers. So, whether you're casting a line, paddling through the bays, flipping a burger, or pedaling along the trails, Birch Brae offers a slice of Wisconsin paradise where nature's beauty and peaceful pleasures abound. Just remember to book your boat rentals early—like the best-kept secrets, availability tends to disappear quickly when summer rolls around. Birch Brae, where the only thing overcrowded is the list of reasons to stay. Other things to note The Vilas County Bike Trail System, affectionately known as the Heart of Vilas, is a cyclist's utopia that stretches over 50 miles of Wisconsin's finest landscapes. This paved paradise connects the dots between St. Germain, Sayner, Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, and Mercer, creating a picturesque network of trails that's recognized as a National Recreational Trail. Imagine pedaling through the Northern Highland American Legion Forest, where the trees stand tall like nature's skyscrapers, and the air is as fresh as the produce in your grandma's garden. The trail is a ribbon of asphalt that weaves through the wilderness, offering scenic rest areas perfect for a picnic or a well-deserved breather. With 20 different parking areas, you can start your journey wherever you fancy – maybe near a quaint café that serves a mean cup of Joe or by a crystal-clear lake that beckons for a quick dip. And let's not forget the swimming spots along the way, because nothing beats the feeling of cool water on your skin after a vigorous bike ride. But it's not just about the journey; it's also about the destinations. Each town along the trail has its own unique charm, from the rustic allure of Boulder Junction to the tranquil vibes of Manitowish Waters. The trail system is so smooth, even your grandpa's old cruiser bike could glide over it with ease. And for those who like a bit of a challenge, there are manageable hills that will make your thighs sing (or scream, depending on your fitness level). Whether you're a seasoned cyclist looking to conquer the full 52 miles or a casual rider seeking a leisurely afternoon jaunt, the Heart of Vilas has got you covered. It's a place where wildlife sightings are as common as potholes in the city, and the only traffic jam you'll encounter is a family of deer crossing the path. So, grab your helmet, pump up those tires, and get ready to Bike the Heart – just remember to pack a sense of adventure and maybe a granola bar or two.
