Shepherd's Hut, Isle of Lewis

Reconnect with nature at this unforgettable escape. Mangersta Croft Holidays is a small glampsite on the stunning Uig peninsula. Two delightful shepherd’s huts and three cosy cabins are located on a working croft on the ocean's edge. A breath-taking sandy beach is a short walk away, nestling between the Mangersta sea cliffs, one of the most beautiful wild coastlines to be found anywhere in Europe. The space The Red Shepherd's Hut has a lovely vintage feel to the décor and makes a romantic retreat, sleeping two on one double bed. Search for Mangersta Croft Holidays and Mangurstadh Gallery for further info/ images of the exact location. The hut is fully insulated, with electric heating making it warm and cosy in any season. It has an en-suite shower/W.C. (toilet roll, shampoo/soap and towels are included in the booking). There is limited WiFi inside the hut at a hotspot on the window ledge. This can also be accessed just outside it. There is TV/DVD player for watching a selection of DVDs (there is no TV network signal in the hut), plus interesting books on island life and nature. The kitchen has a 2 ring hob, microwave/grill, toaster, kettle, full size fridge, coffee maker, frying pan, cooking pots and bowls and all the cutlery and crockery needed to make a meal. Complimentary tea bags, ground coffee, sachets of UHT milk. salt, pepper and sugar are provided, along with dish cloths and washing up liquid. A small table and chairs beside the window offer relaxing views to take in while eating. There is simple bench seating immediately outside the Hut to sit out on a fine day. There is also the option to cook outdoors within a handcrafted stone wall enclosure for camp fires and BBQs. This area is shared with other guests and is a lovely spot to relax, listen to bird song, socialise and take in the beauty of a west coast sunset. Uig has one of the darkest skies in Europe. Therefore on clear nights in winter, spring and autumn there are incredible views of the milky way and you might even be lucky enough to catch the occasional aurora borealis. Please remember that you will be travelling to a beautiful and very popular island location. It is therefore advisable to book flights or ferries at the same as your accommodation. Guest access The red shepherd's hut has private off road parking, immediately beside it. You will have the hut all to yourself. The stone walled Fire pit is a sociable space, shared with other guests. Hosts Elsie or Derek will be here to meet you, or instructions are given for self check in, depending on arrival time. Other things to note Bedding and linen Towels, bedding and bed linen for the double bed are included in your room price. Dogs Dogs are welcome to join you in the Red Hut, but please let us know at the time of booking. There is an additional charge of £10 per night, per dog, which can be paid on arrival. Maximum of 2 dogs in the Red Hut. Ferries/Flights Avoid holiday cancellations by booking ferries or flights to/from the Isle of Lewis and Harris, at the same time as your accommodation. Local shop You will pass by Uig Community Shop on the drive here. It is open 9 to 5 Mon to Sat, is licensed and has groceries, fuel, gifts, ATM, Post Office, a Launderette and is a 12 min drive from Mangersta. It is therefore advisable to stop at Uig Community Shop for supplies on the drive here, before you arrive. Look out for the shop sign on the left hand side of the road at Timsgarry. Uig Community Shop is closed on Sundays. (Nearest shop open on a Sunday is Engebrets in Stornoway) Eating out The excellent Uig Sands Restaurant a 12 min drive and within the local Uig district there are two cafes - The Edge and Uig Community Centre Café. It is essential to book ahead to guarantee an evening meal in the local vicinity.
