Just 5 minutes away is Mission Trails Regional Park home to Cowles Mountain and beautiful Lake Murray. The park’s rugged hills, valleys and open areas encompass more than 8,000 acres of both natural and developed recreational area with 60 miles of trails, and the lake offers swimming and boat rentals for fishing.. At 1,591 feet Cowles Mountain is the highest point within San Diego city limits. From the summit, on a clear day, you can see the ocean. You also can see into Mexico and the rest of San Diego County. The main trailhead is 1.7 miles away, at Navajo and Golfcrest, which has a parking lot and restrooms. From there, a trail goes up the western slope of Cowles Mountain. It is a three-mile round trip to the summit and back, with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. The trail cuts through brushy, rocky chaparral; on a clear day you can expect no shade but exceptional vistas. Take lots of water and sunscreen! Mount Helix, 10-minutes by car, is another great hiking spot that offers panoramic views and on clear days you can see all the way to Mexico from its summit, too..
