Degraves St Old Mill
Degraves St Old Mill
Description
Nestled by the peaceful Hobart Rivulet, this convict-built world heritage listed mill from 1836 offers a glimpse into Tasmania’s past. The cottage comfortably accommodates four guests with a master bedroom and a loft, (accessed by a steep ladder). Located in South Hobart, it’s a short walk to local shops and a scenic stroll along the Rivulet Track takes you to the CBD. Nearby attractions include the Female Factory, Cascade Gardens, Cascade Brewery and walking trails leading up to Kunyanyi. The space Originally built in 1836 as a mill, powered by the Hobart Rivulet, this heritage cottage was later used by female convicts to produce woollen blankets for convicts and soldiers. After the closure of the Female Factory in 1856, the mill was converted into a six-room house. In 1986, the current owners purchased the dilapidated property from the descendants of the original owner. After being lovingly restored over many years, much of the original character remains, including the high ceilings in the kitchen and bedroom, and the two original windows in the bedroom. The cottage now features an open-plan living space, a master bedroom, and a double bed in the loft, (the loft is accessed via a steep ladder so guests should consider if this suits their needs). Outside, the cottage offers a verandah, patio, and terrace, all made from local sandstone, nestled in lush gardens. Set alongside the peaceful Hobart Rivulet, the cottage is a haven for nature lovers, with regular sightings of platypuses, trout, ducks, native hens, wallabies, and cockatoos. Fantastically located, the mill is a short walk to the South Hobart shopping precinct, or guests can follow the Rivulet Track directly into Hobart’s CBD. Guest access Guests will have access to all areas of the cottage both inside and out. Other things to note • Access to the loft bedroom is via a steep ladder—guests should consider if this is suitable for their needs. • The Hobart Rivulet is a natural watercourse. During heavy rains, the water can rise quickly and become a raging torrent. Guests are advised to keep well clear of the edge during these times. This occurs only a handful of times per year, so please exercise caution and commonsense when necessary. • As the property is located next to the rivulet with no fencing, children under 12 are not accepted.
