Providence: Paul McCartney's former hideaway
Providence Estate House, a unique historic Caribbean house, was the home of Paul McCartney and his family when he recorded "Tug of War" and "Ebony and Ivory" with Stevie Wonder in 1981. Originally built in 1918, it was rebuilt following 1989's Hurricane Hugo. Completely private, set in 10 acres on a breezy hilltop with sunset views overlooking the Caribbean from almost 600 feet, you will love the space, peace and serenity of this classical home and its beautiful setting. The space The main (upper) floor consists of a large great room with a cathedral ceiling, a large master bedroom, a large bathroom with whirlpool tub, a large kitchen, and a fully covered verandah that wraps around 3 sides of the building. The lower floor has a large bedroom with large bathroom, a smaller bedroom with small bathroom, and a living room. Both lower bedrooms have direct access to the pool deck, which has a wet bar with refrigerator. All beds are queen beds. Like almost all homes in Montserrat, there is no airconditioning, but there are fans, the cooling tradewinds are almost constant, and the thick stone walls help to keep the downstairs rooms cool. The pool is one of the largest in Montserrat; it is completely private, visible only from the house itself. Furnishings are a mixture of antiques that have been with the house for many years with some modern pieces. Surrounding the house is an extensive lawn and innumerable palms, fruit trees, and ornamental plants, and the garden features a traditional West Indian stone bread oven and "copper" boiling pans, used to reduce sugar cane juice to molasses, from Montserrat's sugar era. Guest access Guests have access to all areas except for a small study room and store room on the ground floor, which is used for the owners' supplies and tools. Other things to note On arrival at the house our local agent and co-host, Yvette Lee, will greet you. You will find a bottle of wine and some breakfast essentials (milk, bread, butter, jam) in the fridge, and some coffee. We can arrange for other groceries to be provided on request. We can provide detailed information to smooth your path in getting to Montserrat, and we can arrange a rental car or taxi service to meet you on arrival. If you are planning to drive in Montserrat you will need a visitor's licence, which you can get in advance online (search for "Montserrat visitor licence") for EC$50 (about US$18). Remember we drive on the left!
