Unbeatable location > House of Pomodoro
Description
I paid too much for this quietly confident bedsitter, but there's so much to love. It was initially built in the late 1800s and found a second life when it was dressed in glossy green tiles by architect Robert Haddon during the Vienna Secession period. A bold choice for an era when society was adjusting to the shock and awe of a naked ankle. Rumour has it this was the HQ for A-lister debauchery (apparently, Elton John and Barbara Streisand have partied here), but who knows? The space Today, it's a fabulous base for exploring the riches of Melbourne City. Sandwiched between Elizabeth and Swanston St – the fancy bit with all the designer shops and heritage-listed arcades – you'll be 100 paces from Flinders St station and 30 paces from Dukes on Flinders Lane, which in my opinion, is one of the prettiest coffee shops in Melbourne. Honestly, the location is excellent. It's the first thing everyone says when I share the address. On the other side of Swanston St you’ll find the ‘Paris’ end of Collins. At ~55sq m, the House of Pomodoro is roomy for a one-bedder and surprisingly quiet given its location. The space was subdivided into apartments in the early 2000s, but I've reintroduced some design cues from the Vienna Secession period without being kitsch. Expect geometric patterns, two-toned stripes, and some moody art, including a rendition of, you guessed it, a Pomodoro tomato. There's a story. I'll tell you about it sometime. *PLEASE READ: Unfortunately, the City of Melbourne does not allow lockboxes and we have an international cast of guests checking in at all hours. In order to follow the rules AND allow for a flexible check-in, your keys will be available at a local convenience store ~400m away (6 minute walk).
