Functional HOUSE - bauhaus Nº 5

Description

Entering the apartments, we have the impression that we have gone back to the turn of the 1920s/1930s, to a period full of energy and faith in a better future, when Warsaw was called the Paris of the North. This is the result of several years of searching for the right form of interior design for the House, inspired by what the apartments might have looked like at that time. Original, meticulously restored furniture, designed in the spirit of the Bauhaus idea, give the place a magical character. The entire apartment is 55 sqm. The space Our apartments are located in the Functional House at the intersection of Jakubowska and Estonian streets. The building is a great example of functionalism. On Saska Kepa you will find a lot of such villas, we recommend walks, preferably with a SAS guide that you will find on our shelves. This part of Warsaw suffered much less during the war than the left bank of the Vistula, which is why many of the historic, pre-war buildings still exist. The Functional House was built in 1928 on the edge of the dynamically developing Kępa in this period. The villa was designed by architect Czesław Przybylski (author of the Polish Theater, Main Railway Station, House without Edges) for his friend, sculptor Mieczysław Lubelski. The architecture of the building belongs to the period of functionalism, and it is this style that it owes its name. The body of the building refers to another design by Przybylski, also completed in 1928 – the School of Graphic Industry on Konwiktorska Street in Warsaw. Especially the distinctive glazing of the sculptor's studio (large northern windows on the ground floor in the restaurant space) combines these two facilities in a special way. The lower unit was a studio and the upper unit had residential functions. After the war, like most buildings in our country, it was taken to the owners and taken over by you. However, it retained its artistic character, being a home and studio for many artists: Agnieszka Osiecka, Elżbieta and Emil Cieślar, Wiktor Gutt and Barbara Turkiewicz-Gutt. In 2011, the new owners took care of the revitalization of the building, creating a Functional House. They wanted to keep as many historical details as possible, but at the same time they decided that the place would still be available to Warsaw. From 2011 to 2018, it housed art galleries such as BWA Warsaw, Asymetry and the East. From March 2026, on the ground floor of the building and in the garden, there is a wonderful Gani restaurant with original cuisine with an oriental touch straight from Singapore. Guest access On the ground floor of the building and in the garden there is a wonderful Gani restaurant with original cuisine with an oriental touch straight from Singapore. On the top floor there is an artistic residence and a terrace with a beautiful view of the rooftops of Saska Kepa. Other things to note The building of the Functional House is a monument, so we tried to restore the interior so as to preserve as many original elements as possible, such as windows, tiles and bathtub in the bathroom, wooden floor or elements of the electrical installation. The interior is complemented by restored antique furniture from the era, all designed and manufactured in the Bauhaus style - a combination of metal and wood. The authors of these projects include Marcel Breuer, Mat Stamm, Emile Guyot as well as designers/manufacturers Hynek Gottwald, Robert Slezák.
