Simple beach retreat by the bay
Simple beach retreat by the bay
Description
This is a simple, seasonal abode on a hushed, shady lane by a sandy, crescent, private beach in the heart of the North Fork farmland. It serves as a base for many adventures: seasonal festivals, historical sites & antiques, art galleries & shops, farm stands & vineyards, Osprey baseball games, hikes, bike rides, tennis, pickleball & golf. The gentle beach is great for swimming, boating, fishing, hunting for shells & glass. The house is loaded with games, movies, & books for a rainy day. The space This small abode is the middle of what were once 3 identical homes built by sisters in the 1920s. It has retained its historical charm. We have repaired and replaced the large windows that keep it cool, and added air-conditioners and ceiling fans throughout. A large fireplace graces the living room, but baseboard heating now adds warmth in the bedrooms on cool spring and fall nights. There is indoor plumbing, yet you will prefer the charming outdoor shower to the tub, even on cool and rainy days. Every room is smaller than what people are used to now, but there is ample communal space. There is a full kitchen, plus a grill in the back. You will feel like you stepped back to a simpler time when people didn’t need much to live close to nature comfortably and well. Guest access We are welcoming you to share in our family's summer retreat. As such, it is filled with treasured remnants of summer memories. You are welcome to use the empty drawers in the bedrooms and all supplies in the kitchen, plus towels and sheets. Make yourself at home, just respect the space! Please clean up after yourselves. Cars are not permitted to be parked on the street. Pull into the driveway and onto the front lawn if necessary. Your stay with us gives you beach access, and you are welcome to use our chairs and umbrella. For safety purposes, we ask that you do not use our sunfish, but feel free to take out the kayak and paddleboard (provided that you wear lifejackets, and consent to not hold us liable for any injuries or mishaps.) Other things to note This is not a place for large, noisy parties. The neighbors all know each other. Many of the homes have been in the same families for generations. It is a special place for wholesome fun. Respect the street speed limit of 10mph, as everyone, including the elderly and the young, walks or bikes down to the beach. The locals may ask where you are staying. Be friendly and respectful. They will certainly help if you have any trouble. Please do not have any campfires on the beach! This is very important! The wind and tall grasses create a fire hazard, especially, but not exclusively, in the hot summer months and evenings. Instead, you are welcome to use the small firepit in our backyard, which is perfect for campfire meals and roasting marshmallows. Finally, there is no local garbage collection. If you are unable to take your trash with you, seal the bags, place and cover them in the bins located in the shed. Close the shed doors with the latch. Don't let the critters get the garbage!
