Greystones - Staithes
Description
This stylish place to stay is perfect for group trips. Greystones is a charming late 17th Century Grade II listed house standing on the High Street right in the heart of the historic fishing village of Staithes. It was originally a village inn called the Golden Lion – and reputedly a hotbed of smuggling activity – now it is a spacious and characterful holiday get-away sleeping 9 people in 5 bedrooms where you can self cater in comfort and style. The space TOUR OF THE HOUSE Step off the street into the Entrance Hall leading to the lounge, the snug, the coat and boot cupboard and toilet. Stairs to the first floor and half stairs to the rear hallway, the coal store and then the kitchen-dining room. The lounge This has sofas and chairs for approximately eight (9 if you are friendly!), a TV with FreeSat and DVD, sound system, games for you to play and a collection of local information. The focal point is the lovely fireplace where you can burn logs or coal. The snug The main feature in this lovely little room is the huge old range – no longer working but very interesting to look at and think of the action it’s seen at family mealtimes in the past. This room has a sofa, a small table with chairs and a Freeview TV with DVD player. Ideal for retreating to read the paper over morning coffee or for children to draw and make things sitting up at the table. Dining Kitchen This room is accessed from the rear hall one way, via a half flight of stairs from the main hall and from another way down a half flight of stairs from the first floor landing. This will be confusing at first but after you have got lost on the way back to the lounge several times you will get the hang of it! The dining area has a large table that can be extended even further if necessary and is framed by the old ship’s timber set into the exposed sandstone wall. The kitchen has ample cupboard and worktop space and catering facilities include an electric hob and fan assisted oven, a full sized fridge and freezer, sink, large microwave, large toaster, kettle and a wide selection of cooking utensils, pots and pans as well as high quality tableware. FIRST FLOOR The en-suite room Reached by a small flight of stairs off themain landing this is a very spacious room in a secluded part of the house with windows at each end and a kingsize bed.The ensuite shower room has a basin, toilet and large shower cubicle with drench shower. Double Bedroom Further along the landing, this room is at the front of the house and is light and airy. It is generous in size with a kingsize bed. Twin room This is also on the front of the house and has two full sized single beds which are set at opposite ends of the room. There is also a small Freeview TV with inbuilt DVD. Shower room and separate toilet The shower room is between the double room and the twin room and has a large shower cubicle with drench shower, toilet and wash basin. The separate toilet is situated just across the landing. SECOND FLOOR Stairs lead from the first-floor landing to the second floor – there is a low beam on the way up to the second-floor landing so you must watch your head… Single room This is a delightful little room with a steeply sloping ceiling and the beautiful old roof beams exposed. There is a traditional Yorkshire sash window at floor level and Velux window in the roof. This room has one full sized single bed and is cosy for one – especially as there is limited full height standing room due to the sloping ceiling. Double room This is the largest room in the house and again has exposed beams and sloping ceilings making it very short at one end and very tall at the other! There are windows in two directions, including two traditional Yorkshire sash windows at floor level. There is a kingsized bed. Bathroom Off the landing a short flight of stairs, ducking under a low doorway, leads to the bathroom with a bath, basin, toilet and shower cubicle with drench shower. Laundry room This is equipped with a high-quality washing machine and a tumbler drier. Other things to note We aim to provide all your holiday needs within the basic cost of your rental, there are no extra costs apart from a £25 charge for dogs . Your holiday price includes all the heating and electricity costs, coal for the lounge fire (which you won’t need to use unless daytime temperatures are subzero), free use of the telephone to landlines after 6pm and at weekends and all bed linen & bath towels. Arrival, unloading and parking We will probably have already explained to you that there is no long term public car parking in the lower part of Staithes but there are three car parks which are only 200m up the Bank from Greystones. For arrival and departure there is short term (40 minutes) public parking on the road outside the house which you can use to unload and load; don’t be put off by the road signs at the top of the Bank suggesting that you shouldn’t drive down into the village. If all that space is full, which may occur at peak times, you will find that if you pull up carefully on to the pavement immediately outside Greystones cars and vans can still pass down the road. The three car parks in Staithes which you can use are just at the top of the bank before its descent into the village. The main public car park (North Yorkshire Council) is situated at the top of the Bank on the right of the mini roundabout as you drive down into the village. The charge for this during most of the year is £7.20 per 24 hours payable at the pay & display meter, by coin, debit / credit card or RingGo App but in the winter (1st November to 28th February) it is free. This car park has the advantage that the 24 hour ticket can be used in most other North Yorkshire Council car parks (such as Sandsend, Robin Hood’s Bay and the long term car parks in Whitby) which will save money if you want to park in these often. You can also purchase permits for your entire time in Staithes from North Yorkshire Tourism Bureau. The second car park, Staithes Lane Pay & Display is £10 a day. They have cameras for automatic number plate recognition when driving in the area & are very strict on times paid for. Payment is coins or Tap2park App. The third, private car park, Glen Vale, is slightly nearer to the house. It has the advantage that you are given a traffic cone with a Greystones label on it that you use to reserve your space when you go out. Cost £10 a day. It is now essential to prebook space in this car park
