Description

Nestling in the woods of Fermoyle Lodge The Old House is a lovingly restored nineteenth century heritage building blessed with delightful gardens and glorious mountain views. One of two neighbouring cottages set in the splendid isolation of South Connemara it is the ultimate in tranquillity and rural charm. Close to coral sand beaches yet within 40 minutes of cosmopolitan Galway City, there is great hiking, boating and a good choice of restaurants/pubs with live music only 20 minutes away. The space The Old House is a sensitively restored hideaway in the grounds of Fermoyle Lodge bursting with old world charm. Built in 1873 as the original estate manager’s cottage it is a rare, much treasured heritage building that provides a comfortable, elegant space with beautiful views across the extensive gardens. One of two neighbouring cottages The Old House is perfect as a stand-alone property for two people or can be rented in addition to Keeper’s Cottage for a family or group of friends. The Old House has been decorated with thought and care complementing the style of this historic Victorian corrugated iron building. The living space is light and graciously proportioned with a comfortable seating area in front of a wood burning stove, a good sized farmhouse dining table and a well-appointed kitchen area with all of the equipment and utensils required to cook up a feast. The bedroom space and bathroom are at one end of the cottage with a king-sized bed (that can also be organised as two single beds) and a modern en-suite shower room with a rainwater shower. Both The Old House and neighbouring Keeper’s Cottage are set in a uniquely tranquil, remote spot overlooking 12 acres of woodland and gardens. On arrival guests are greeted with an exquisite view across a cascading stream which runs down the side of the drive to the ornamental pond in front of the main house. Combining extensive woodland, an orchard with pear, plum and apple trees and a rhododendron avenue the garden at Fermoyle Lodge and its surroundings provide an endless source of pleasure. Mary and John take great pride in the garden recently introducing a range of exotic and native trees and shrubs to enhance the overall effect. We have also created a series of paths so that guests can enjoy a gentle stroll around this wild corner of Connemara. In addition to the two cottages we also have an annex to the main house with two spacious self contained, well-appointed en-suite bedrooms with their own private entrance. So if you have a party of 8/9 family or friends we can accommodate everyone in a combination of Keeper’s Cottage (for four), The Old House (for two) and the annex which we call The Mews (for up to four). Further information about The Mews is available on request. So that guests are aware we suffered an extreme storm in the west of Ireland in January 2025 and we lost a great many of our biggest mature trees in Fermoyle which was very sad. We have embarked on the restoration of the woodland but the storm was very severe so it will take some time to restore and replant the trees. In the meantime guests will still be able to enjoy most of the garden even if parts of the woodland are inaccessible because of the fallen trees. Thank you for your understanding. Guest access Guests will have access to the grounds and woodland around the cottage and can walk down to Lake Fermoyle and Lake Derreen directly from the bottom of the garden. The woodland is particularly magical with its moss covered rocks, ancient trees and stone walls. It has the feel of a secret, secluded corner where time has stood still and affords a sense of peace and tranquillity that is rarely found in the modern world. Other things to note The only thing we ask of our guests that they do not burn candles in the cottage as this is a fire hazard and we are very safety conscious.
