Description

Kensington Lodge is a beautiful house with enormous character and architectural interest located in trendy Portobello and a short stroll to the city centre. The space Our highly decorative, detached house, which has 279sq m (3,003sq ft) of space, was designed by English architect William Isaac Chambers in 1882. The fantastically ornate brickwork and terra cotta on this Queen-Anne Style house was designed by Chambers himself and Kensington Lodge is something of an ambitious showcase of the architects work. The house is built over three storeys with highly decorative interior and exterior flourishes from the heavy swag over the front door and the baroque female herms on either side of the main upstairs window to the elaborate stucco work in the gracious livingroom. Other original features include several elaborate coloured glass windows, including the wheel window at attic level at the front. It’s very much one of kind. At hall level there are two rooms, one very grand livingroom to the front, with high ceilings, a period fireplace and elaborate cornice work and a large bedroom/study to the back. As in most rooms in this detached house, they enjoy light from two directions. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, one double with dual aspect windows and fireplace. A second dual aspect bedroom with a small Queen size bed and a large single sofa bed (this can be set up upon request). The third bedroom has bunk beds and there also a family bathroom with shower and bath on this level. On up further, the attic is accessed by a spiral staircase and this has two bedrooms. One bedroom has a comfortable king size futon and the second bedroom has two single beds. Down in the basement, there is a large eat-in kitchen with contemporary units topped with granite as well as an Aga. Off this is a family room, with wood-burning stove which opens out via custom-made concertina doors to the garden which is at the side of the house. The garden is large and private and includes off-street car-parking. There’s also another shower room at this level and a utility room. A new heating system has just been installed making the property warm and homely.
