Huge, cozy, and comfortable basement apartment with plenty of room to stretch your legs and unwind. Located in a gracious, stately brick home with gardens on a secluded, quiet street, the apartment has a perfect location in Lexington's historic "Golden Triangle" just one block away from the town's shops, restaurants, galleries, theater, and W&L University. In 1934, Charles Locher, the owner of a local brick factory, built his home at 211 Barclay Lane to showcase the beauty of brick through exquisite ornamental detail. Like the house built by the third little pig in the children's story, this house is extremely well-constructed and solid. Guests will be most secure and safe, knowing that no wolves can blow this house down. :) Snugly housed in the fully finished and furnished basement level of the only house in town with a brick foundation, guests will be warm and cozy in the winter, and naturally cool in the summer. In keeping with the brick theme, an original brick wall is exposed and the vintage linoleum floor is a brick pattern. To enhance the brick tones, the apartment is decorated with warmly colored textiles, rugs, and artwork. Occupying 1200 sq. ft., the apartment has ample space to spread out. The 40' long continuous space at the front of the apartment--accommodating living room, dining room, and workspace in between--conveys a feeling of openness. The living area, featuring a sofa bed, coffee table, rocking chair, fireplace, recreation center, and built-in bookshelves with large library, is a comfortable place to hang out, talk with friends, read, play games and do puzzles (there is a puzzle table under the bed), watch vintage videos, stream movies on the TV, or even play guitar. The dining room has a large round table for 4, shelving for pottery, a console table, and a closet. Between the living and dining rooms is a workspace with large table with lamps, outlets, and Internet for those guests who need to work or hold Zoom meetings. The well-lit dining room table also serves well as a second workspace. A sliding partition can separate the dining from the living room areas in case more privacy is needed for a guest on the living room sofa bed, or someone working at the dining room table. The large floor plan contains enough open space to do yoga or place an inflatable double mattress. The rear of the apartment contains the bedroom, large walk-in storage closet, bathroom, hall, and kitchen with washer and dryer. The bedroom has a firm queen bed with quality sheets and pillows, two dressers, a large double closet, and suitcase racks. The fully equipped kitchen has a coffeemaker and everything you need to cook, inc. blender, wok, Cuisinart, etc. Guests have full access to the entire apartment. They also have access to the backyard, patio, and picnic table, but not the screened-in back porch. With advance permission, guests can also access the grill on the back patio (grill tools are provided in the apartment). Guests also have access to the front yard, including the bench under the maple tree, and are encouraged to spend time outside to enjoy the sunshine (hopefully), flowers, and birdsongs. To access the apartment, walk through the open garage, and take the stairs at the back left corner down to the basement door. There is a lockbox with a key on the door. Before your arrival, I will text you the code. Since I live upstairs, I typically can greet you and let you in. I look forward to meeting my guests, and making them feel at home in a private part of my home. Since I live upstairs, I will be accessible and available to help make them comfortable or answer any questions. I love living here on Barclay Lane because I enjoy the best of two worlds: nature and town. My yard is filled with flowers, butterflies, birds, and rabbits, and for better or worse, the occasional family of deer. I can walk the nearby Woods Creek path all the way to Jordan’s Point on the Maury River, and from there along the Chessie Trail past cliffs and wildflowers for 6 miles. Yet a block away, I can walk to the bookstore for the morning paper, the coffee shop for tea and conversation, the movie theater, and art galleries. Whether I am buying olive oil or running shoes, I do most errands on foot. I can even walk to Kroger’s and CVS. During the pandemic, it is lovely to be outside and have outdoor spaces to picnic like Blue Sky Bakery, Hopkins Green, or my own backyard! The best way to get around Lexington from this property is to leave your car parked at the house, and walk everywhere you need to go. You can walk to a restaurant or bistro, have a drink, and not worry about a designated driver, since you can just walk home. You can walk to the Post Office at the end of the street, or over the Nelson St bridge to the pharmacy and grocery store. A note on parking: Guests can park on the semi-circular gravel driveway near the maple tree. Please pull to the front of the driveway past the front walkway to allow for a second vehicle behind you. One parking space only is reserved for this apartment, while a second parking space on the gravel driveway may be granted by permission in advance for a paying guest. A third parking space on the cement driveway for an overnight guest will be charged $20/night. With permission, friends or visitors of guests may park for short periods of time up to 4 hours, preferably on the gravel driveway. Extra temporary parking may be granted for special occasions like graduations with advanced permission. Under no circumstances may there be more than 3 cars parked on the property in order to leave space for my car. The right side of the cement driveway must be kept clear for my car to go in and out of the garage. Use of the sofa bed is considered an extra person charge of $20/night. Arrival and departure times are flexible. Please ask if you need a late check-in or late check-out and I will try to accommodate you. I look forward to meeting you and helping you have a pleasant stay in Lexington in any way that I can!
